After listening to the starter podcast from brew strong. I would like to add some yeast nutrient to my next starter. Austin homebrew has a few. Is there a specific one I should use or does it not matter.
On a side note, in some of the starters I've done previosly, I've boiled in some unused pkges of dry yeast. Is that just as effective?

fermaid-k is supposed to be a good one, but i normally don't use nutrient in my starters. no real reason, i just haven't seen a need for it. what do you mean you've boiled in some unused packages of dry yeast? you don't need to make a starter for dry yeast if that's what you're getting at.

I have used Wyeast yeast fuel in starters, with no apparent benefit. So I no longer use it in starters. I do add it to the boil though.

when i am boiling up my dme, i will add some dry yeast to the boil as nutrients.
so my starter will be ultralight dme, water, dead boiled dry yeast and then i will pitch my california ale yeast into it.

I was wondering about this too. I have servomyces that I have as a yeast nutrient and was thinking of whether or not I should put it in my starter. Since it's so expensive, I decided against it.
