Rivals High - School seeks to forfeit 100-0 win

This is the lamest thing ever. Hey! It was disgraceful how much we annihilated your team so we're going to rub it in further by forfeiting!

By the looks of it the intention was to blow them out by as much as possible. They had no remorse until after the fact when people called them out. Pretty lame if you ask me.

The real solution here would be to move this team into a league where they would actually have some competition.

"Peloza said the coach and other parents praised the Dallas Academy girls afterward for limiting Covenant to 12 points in the fourth quarter."

Hahaha I'm sure they were trying REALLY hard at 88 - 0 in the 4th.

Give me ****ing break. I'm a parent and one of the things that I've tried to instill in my kids is that they will lose, eventually. The main lesson is to play well and have fun, and if winning a game is so important, then bust your ass to beat the other team.

Losing, like winning, is a part of life and imparts it's own lessons.

I'm sure it was treated like a practice by the winning team. It's like girls who want to be on the boys wrestling team. A boy shouldn't feel like he has to take it easy on the opponent just because she's a girl. Hopefully the losing team learned something from it.
I still think the game shouldn't have happened unless the losing team just wants to have their team members interacting regardless of the outcome??

Yeah, the forfeiting thing is ridiculous and another kick in the groin. They deserved to win, so they did. Perhaps the winning team thought they needed some good karma or something.

I also don't see why they should have intentionally tried not to score that much. I think it's more condescending to back off and put your scrubs into a game. You're basically telling the other team "you are so bad that we can still beat you with our worst players and without trying". I've never cared how bad I was losing at anything--it has always just infuriated me when someone "takes it easy" on me. Life isn't all roses and champagne--sometimes you get your ass kicked.

As a sidenote, I would love to lose a game 100-0. It would be a great story to tell.

Jesus Christ!

No matter now much you try to avoid it, people including your kids are going to be hopelessly outmatched at some point in their life. The point is teaching them that losing is not the end of the world, that there are limitless opportunities for success!

You can't avoid a match for fear of failure, even for your kids. Because that teaches them that the outcome is more important than the fight.

Exactly. This whole stupid movement of "everyone is a winner" is bull****.

Don't want your team to get blown out? Compete against other special needs schools. It's like telling Dash Incredible that he can place, but don't win the race because it's too easy for him. I guess noble prize winners should be ashamed of themselves too.

I dont understand why it is bad to win by 100 points...

You win some, you lose some... sometimes by HUGE margins... who cares. Isnt it a "game"?

I would never have my child apologize for winning by 100 points, nor would I allow them to accept such an apology from someone.

We are a nation being coddled... yay, the future looks so bright.

They should be teaching sportsmanship... remember when that meant being a good loser?

Now it means apologizing for winning and playing to the best of your ability.....

Oh, sorry I played so well... sorry I aced my test... sorry I got that scholarship... I am sorry, we should all be EQUAL and MEDIOCRE.

This is the socialism of sports... where we are all equal, no one is better than anyone else.

If this is the case.. I want my NFL deal... it isnt fair that I dont get to be in the NFL and others do, the elitists!

Wow.... I can't believe not one person agrees that this was poorly handled....

We are talking about high school sports and a team of girls who just want to have fun..... 'Yeah F' them lets score 500 points next time and then throw dog **** in their lockers. That will make us sooo cool!'

Give me a break. If you never learned good sportsmanship in high school then I feel bad for all of you. You will lose and I am sure those poor girls know they aren't going to the WNBA. They are just there to compete and have fun.

A full court press for the whole game and leaving your starters in for the full time?!!!! I would have been sooooooooooo pissed if I was a parent or a player. Its fighting tie at that point. Yeah I may have lost the game, but if you want to rub it in that bad to prove you are sooo awesome, I'm gonna punch you in the neck. We'll see how awesome you are then.

I played football at one in one of the best football programs in Wisconsin, where playing football is a lot like movies portray high school football. We kicked the crap out of a lot of teams who played hard. Do you think we ran up the score? No, we got a small lead, then played back ups and made the game fun and realistic for both sides. WHat is the point of running up a score in high school? Be a man (or woman in this case) and show some respect.

Everyone involved from that school should get punched in the ovaries.

Holy crap!!!!

The losers don't care! The fact is that there is no excuse for acting like that. I am pretty good at karate... maybe next time I see you I should break your knee cap and tell you that if you could adequately defend yourself that you just lose. Now deal with it.

The losing team is the only one who handled themselves in an upstanding manner. High school sports are meant to teach life lessons as well as be a work out and a good source of HEALTHY competition. This whole thing and the response from this forum has me all riled up.

I can't believe no-one here believes in gentlemanly sportsmanship.

Also, this isn't like apologizing for doing well on a test. It is like going to a special needs class, getting 1005 percent while some disabled kid gets a zero, and then calling them retarded.... disgusting if you ask me.

Growing up in Iowa, this certainly wasn't the case. Think "Varsity Blues." Competition was fierce. We made several state championships for Football and Basketball, however, and that would not have happened without the exclusionary and aggressive ways of our eccentric coaches. Definitely wasn't "just to have fun" and it certainly wasn't my cup of tea.

Kirk Heinrich played on our basketball team. Same grade as me. Coach's son. Didn't really like the guy myself, but he could play some mean hoops. I saw him dribble through the middle of all 5 defensive players once at a state championship and go up for a slam dunk. Amazing stuff.

Just to be an annoyance, Dash Incredible was told not to blow them away as to not expose his Super Powers and get his family in trouble.

But I agree with everyone here. It is important to lose. And if you're loosing 100-00 I'm sure the 100 point tema stopped trying long ago. And If they worked and played hard the whole game and beat them 100-00 then good for them, You need to do the best you can at everything you do. Not, Do your best, unless johnny sucks and down play your talents so you don't hurt his feelings.

This just in...the Giants are returning their Super Bowl rings and forfeiting the last Super Bowl. "We just feel that by winning that game we prevented history from being made. This is what the team has decided to do in an attempt to make amends."

Reminds me when I play Halo 3 online, except the part where the kiddies actually forfeit after feeling bad about killing me over and over.

Sounds like your coach had the class of the Varsity Blues coach too....

My highschool has been in the State Championship D1 football 6 times since 2000 (we have only missed 2 years) and have the most state trophies of any team in the state. All but 4 players from my senior year went on to play college ball and I know two players who have made it to the NFL. Yeah we were OK.....

You don't have to be a chest thumping dick to be good. You need to be small minded and have an inferiority complex to do that.

I give a lot of credit to those girls for keeping there cool and playing to the buzzer. They are stronger and better losers than I am.

No, kids should not be forced to compete, and if they are, they should compete in their class. If a team or child is outclassed, it is not the onus of the victor to apologize for winning. If the victor apologizes, it assumes that something was wrong, and the defeated team.child doesn't learn that they have to either play harder or compete in their skill level.

Do you think, when these kids grow up, there is going to be anyone out there that says, "Yes, you lost, snookie wookums, but it was unfair! You will be our new VP! Don't worry about skill or aptitude! It was wrong for that other candidate to be so much more viable than you!"

Give me a break!

Give me a break. If you never learned good sportsmanship in high school then I feel bad for all of you.

IMO good sportsmanship involves playing your hardest, playing fairly, being a good loser, and a humble winner. I don't see how playing your best against an inferior team is bad sportsmanship.

Wow... no-one gets it?

I am not aying you will never lose or people should be sheltered from losing! My point is it is a sh!tty move to beat someone by 100 points

Win by 20, hell even 30 points. But you don't teach you're kids to kick someone when they are down, then rape their sister, steal their video games, drink their homebrew and then vomit in their couch. Winning should be enough. Winning with dignity is even better.

This team put on a full court press for an ENTIRE game. That was really necessary? To not even let your opponent take a shot in a game?

I agree. The coach should have lost or be very close to losing his/her job.

If my kid was in there playing that hard with that big of a lead, I would pull them myself. There is no need to risk injuring your players when you are winning like that. Give the 2nd/3rd string players some game time.

Does anyone here have a grasp of how ridiculous 100-0 is? In high school?

What we were just playing our best.... whine whine whine. Bull****, you rubbed your opponents face in it just because you could. If you call that sportsmanship, I want to throw up.

Thank God sanity still exists!

BTW, I am not arguing that apologizing was dumb. That's almost as dumb as the game in the first place. I am saying the coach should be fired for severe lack of judgment, and the team should have someone come talk to them about leadership. The captain of that team should have said this is enough, a parent should have done so, the athletic director should have do so... someone should have!

I think you're not getting it, BK.

Everyone on that court played their best, that's the point of competing. If my kids decide to compete in a game or for a job, I'm going to tell them to do their best. It's not about the feelings of the competition, it's about doing the best you can.

If your best blows the competition out the water, then so what? They should have played harder. I don't want my kids to feel bad for losing, and I sure as hell don't my kids to feel bad for giving their all, even if it does embarrass the competition. When they grow up, and it's time for them to really excel, I don't want them to even risk their dreams a little bit on how that will make the competition feel. If you compete, you give it your all, period.

I agree it was a bad move. It sounds like bad sportsmanship (which we were taught, along with winning...yes, i played ball) and bad planning all around to even let them compete. It's a dick move that they forfeit after the fact as well. There's no saving face on this one.

It's all bull****, folks. And it's bad for ya.

I am with you, Boerderij. I played soccer in high school, on a not very good team. We came up against teams we KNEW were going to wipe the field with our asses, and usually when they got up to about 12 points (usually to 0 or 1), they would back off and start to use the game to hone their skills through extensive passing, etc. Did it piss me off? Yeah, a little, because I knew they weren't playing their hardest, but I also appreciated not watching their score climb steadily into the 20s.

On the rare occasion we outclassed a team and could have scored over and over, we usually restrained ourselves to only scoring around 10 or so. There is no need to continually pound home to your opponent how outclassed they are (believe me, they KNOW).

As n example, should Michael Phelps have choked up after his first win? Should he have let others get a few golds despite the fact that he had trained harder and was more apt to win?

You guys are arguing "playing your hardest" as though there was any chance of these people LOSING. Players shouldn't feel bad for winning, but very few people I know (that have any class) revel in beating the tar out of people that are so clearly inferior at something.

It would be like Michael Phelps going to some community swim meet against 12 year olds and swimming all out to prove how great he is.

Edit: The apology and ensuring forfeit were dumb. The thing had already happened, that just made it worse.

@Boerderij_Kabouter - to make an appropriate analogy, if you submitted a beer to a competition and the judge thought it was really bad, would you a) want him/her to score it just low enough not too place and just tell you it needs a little work, or b) would you want him to mark it as poorly as he felt it deserved and tell you everything that was wrong with it?
