So after a pretty messy boil over yesterday I let my aluminum brew pot soak in b-brite cleanser for a couple hours. Before doing so I even searched online and found this quote on http://www.eckraus.com/PS340.html
Active oxygenated cleaner. Sanatizes without the use of chlorine or sulfites. For washing bottles and equipment: vessels, air-locks, tanks, hydrometers, utensils, bottles, hoses. Works equally as well on glass, plastics, stainless-steel, aluminum.
Sounds like it should work fine. Well 2 hours later I return to find this.

Is it still usable? I'd love to buy a SS brewpot, but can't afford one at the moment. Any thoughts?

Wow....good luck. I have never had a boil over..but a friend recommended to me that easy clean and a lot of elbow grease might work. I am not sure what b-brite is, but it may be the same as easy clean. You might even want to try non scratch brush of some kids.

Man......good luck...let me know what works for future use...

Nothing wrong with it (assuming you are concerned about the really shiny part). Aluminum will be very shiny until the surface develops a protective oxide. Give it a week or two, if you cleaned the inside as well. If you only did the outside, it will be fine to use it now. Bare aluminum and acidic wort are a bad combination.

That oxide layer is what makes aluminum so stable. Unlike iron oxide, aluminum oxide sticks very tightly to the base metal.

I wouldnt worry about it. In fact if I had any concerns I would just hit it with a sponge and some Barkeeper's Friend then rinse the hell outa it, maybe give it a good boil, and go right back to using it.

TBH I kinda like the shiny look:p

Actually, the top of the pot was the dirtiest so I let it soak upside down in the solution. The dull top is the result. Since it was upside down the solution also did the same to the upper portion of the inside. Although the inside wasn't nearly as shiny. Also, it's kind of hard to tell from the picture, but right along the "border" there is a dark ring.
