So I brew a particular beer that I really like and decided I'm going to enter my recent batch into the Sam Adam's Longshot competition. This year is "specialty beers", which this recipe certainly is, but it asks for a base category. I'm pretty unfamiliar with official categorization and don't know where this would fall in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recipe includes:

Marris Otter
Rye Malt
Caramel 60L
Chocolate Malt
Smoked Malt
Brown Sugar

Kent Golding and Williamette Hops
Wyeast 1056 American Ale Yeast

It's 6% ABV and about 50 IBU's. Has a pretty substantial hop bite to it.

Any idea where to place it?

This decision can't be made by someone who hasn't had the beer.

23 does not require a base style. You just need to:

1. Explain what it is
2. Explain why it does not fit in another category

smoked brown porter is a possibility, or smoked rye brown porter if the rye is obvious

i thought the whole purpose of this year specialty 23 was to make a beer that wouldnt really fall in a certain category? i agree with the above poster, maybe rye smoked porter, but i cant say without a taste
