For now, I'm stuck with a boil volume of 4.75 gallons based on my equipment. So, I do partial mash recipes using ~7 lbs grain and whatever DME near the end of the boil and whatever water into the fermenter to reach my desired OG and volume. Can I do this rye IPA recipe or will I get a stuck sparge? I do a split batch sparge and get 75-80% eff. The rye will be 19.72% of the total grains/extract but it'll be 31.44% of the grains in the MLT (Rubbermaid 10 gal with braid):

0.50 lb Rice Hulls (0.0 SRM) Adjunct 4.14 %
3.50 lb Light Dry Extract (8.0 SRM) Dry Extract 29.00 %
3.50 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 29.00 %
2.38 lb Rye, Flaked (2.0 SRM) Grain 19.72 %
0.75 lb Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 6.21 %
0.44 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 3.65 %
1.00 lb Corn Sugar (Dextrose) (0.0 SRM) Sugar 8.29 %

Thanks!

Nate

Can you get rye malt? What you are suggesting would probably work, but it would work better with rye malt.

AND with a 10 gal. cooler MLT you can do the AG version which is 12 lbs of 2 row.

Is the rye malt less sticky than flaked rye?

I think david_42 was recommending malt over flaked for diastatic power. Rye malt has it and flaked Rye does not. It would just help you convert your starches better and improve your efficiency...

"AND with a 10 gal. cooler MLT you can do the AG version which is 12 lbs of 2 row."

I sure can, but I can only collect 4.75 gallons into my boil pot. I don't like going with less than 1 qt sparge water per lb of grain with each batch sparge since it effects efficiency. Limits me to about 7 lbs for now. What type of mash tun did you use? No problem with a stuck sparge?

For the PM version of this I used a 5 gal MLT cooler, and a large Grain bag. The next time, I used the 10 gal cooler MLT, with a stainless braid. I had no issues either time with sparging or efficeincy.

awesome...I'm going for it. I really liked that bear republic hop rod ale but it's hard to come buy in my parts.
thanks!
