So after about 20 brews I'm planning my move from extract/mini-mash to All Grain sometime this fall. I'm torn between getting a cooler type mash tun or spending the extra money and going with a kettle/burner mash tun.

So far it seems to break down like this:

Cooler Pros - holds temp best, less expensive
Cooler Cons - not good for step mashing/rests, durability

Kettle Pros - ideal for step mashing/rests, durability, customization
Kettle Cons - expense, bleeds heat

I'd like to get some feedback from those who have experience with both
systems....

- If you moved between one or the other, what made you switch?
- Did you get what you wanted out of the switch and are happy about it?
- Did switching make your brew day noticeably longer/shorter?
- For those who use kettles, how often do you actually do step mash vs. single?

How about BIAB? Kettle MT's are best when using pumps to recirculate. Applying direct heat to a MT works best if the wort is moving. Coolers work great as well...really up to you and the effort you want to put into it...sorry but there really is no "best" way IMO. Happy brewing.:mug:
