Thoughts?

On Yoopers suggestion I've made the following tweaks.

Recipe Type: All Grain
Yeast: Wyeast - Northwest Ale
Batch Size (Gallons): 5.5
Boil Size (Gallons): 6.394
Original Gravity: 1.061
Final Gravity: 1.019
IBU: 42.8
Boiling Time (Minutes): 60
Color: 35.4
Efficiency: 65%

12 lbs 2-row (US)
12 oz Cara-Pils/Dextrine
6 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 10L
6 oz Amber Malt
16 oz Carafa Special III (possibly added 30 min into the mash)

60 min - .75 oz - Amarillo 9.5% AA
30 min - .50 oz - Simcoe 13%
15 min - .50 oz - Amarillo 9.5%
Dry hop - .5 oz - Cascade 6%

15 minute - Irish moss - 1 tsp

I say . . . MORE HOPS!!!!!!!

+1 I would at least double all of your late hop additions & dry hopping. Maybe something more like this:

60 min - .75 oz - Amarillo 9.5% AA
30 min - .50 oz - Simcoe 13%
15 min - 1 oz - Amarillo 9.5%
5 min - 1 oz - Cascade 6%
0 min - 1 oz - Amarillo 9.5%
Dry hop - .5 oz - Cascade 6%
Dry hop - .5 oz - Amarillo 9.5%

However this will be very hop forward, if you are going for a more subdued hop bill then go with yours.

Hop heads! :mug:

I was aiming for the lighter hop side of the American IPA style, but I might have underdone it.

Thanks for the input!

your gonna get some nice flavor and aroma with that hop bill, but almost no bitterness due to the grains your using along with that small amount of amarillo. i would use a higher alpha hop for the 60min if you want any distinct bitterness. something like an 1oz of chinook, magnum, columbus, warrior, etc.

Why? I didn't do the math, but it seems like an ounce of 9.5% AAUs would provide enough bitterness. If not, you could go up to 1.25 ounce. If there are nearly 43 IBUs, it's ok. I'd probably go 50 IBUs, if it was my beer. But the amarillo is fine, if that's what you've got.

.5oz amarillo he wanted use in the recipe at 60min, not 1oz. i personally would use more than .5 amarillo for bittering a black ipa. i thought just a higher alpha hop would be more appropriate as well. your right though, amarillo would be ok if he used more than 1/2oz.

AH! I thought it said "1 ounce". Damn these middle aged eyes!

I saw that the recipe said 43 IBUs for an OG of 1.060, though, which isn't too far out of line. I'd probably go with 50-55 IBUs there.
