Any thoughts/suggestions on this all-grain recipe I came up with?

Looking for a basic lighter pale ale using Citra.

10 gallon batch:
Yeast:
- Safale US-05 (dry two packs)

Grain:
- 14lb 2-row pale malt
- 2lb German Pilsner
- 2lb Flaked Oats
- 2lb Crystal 40 (or perhaps just 1)

Hop schedule (still playing with):
- 1.5 to 2oz Amarillo: 60 mins
- .75oz Citra: 15 mins
- .75oz Citra: 10 mins
- .75oz Citra: 5 mins
- .75oz Citra: 0 mins

mash at 148-150 for 60 minutes
Boil 60 minutes

Ferment 65'ish.

Thanks for any feedback!

Great start. A few comments:

  • If using Pilsner malt, need a 90 minute boil to drive off DMS
  • I like Pale Ale malt for a base malt...2-row still works great, I just like 'em a bit more malty. Personal preference. 2-row would def. be lighter.
  • I'd go 1# crystal, especially if you use a maltier base malt
  • Bittering with Amarillo seems like a waste...maybe bitter with something else and dry hop with the Amarillo
  • Dry hopping recommended

Thanks for the feedback!

Good point on Pilsner, will either do a 90 minute or get rid of the Pilsner.
You would go less 2-row pale malt? I originally was going with 12 but the gravity calculations were too low so i added a few more and then added the Pilsner.
May use the Amarillo as aroma hop additions with the citra and find another bitter hop.

Adding oats for a bit of creaminess, tried one that was good with it. Maybe just a lb.

Thanks again!

Nope, sorry. I just can't read. Totally missed the word pale in there. Was just trying to say I'd use Pale Ale malt instead of plain 2-row. Amount looks great.

What did you come up with for a final recipe? I got 4 oz of Citra and Amarillo each and looking for a good recipe. Thxs

I ended up with this for a 10 gallon batch:

- 16lb 2 row
- 2lb crystal 40
- 1lb 8 oz oats

- 1.5 oz amarillo @30
- .75 citra @ 15, 10, 5, and 0
- .5 oz amarillo @ 0

- Whirlfloc @15
- SA-05

- Mash 150 for 60 minutes

- OG: 1.046
- FG: 1.005

If I were to do it again, I may drop down the crystal to 1 and a half lbs.

I like it and would do it again.

Cheers.
