do barley wines always have a vodka taste

i bought some flying dog barley wine and wow it tastes like an ipa with a cup of vodka is that normal or will is fade with age.
 
No, a vodka taste wouldn't be the norm. Maybe it's just one with an extremely high alcohol content. I've had barleywines that were balanced, some that favored malt, some that favored hops, and some that have a decent alcohol bite. Just depends on which one you get.
 
Sounds like a hot alcohol flavor. Oftentimes high alcohol beers that were fermented warm or not aged long enough can have that flavor.
 
Stash the bottles and check them at 3 month intervals. Write a "drink after" date on the bottle & take notes.
