Just transplanted my 3 year Tetnanger from a half whiskey barrel to the ground and was amazed on how root bound the hops were after two years in a barrel. The whole process was a pain to get the root ball and dirt up out of the barrel and into the ground. I found out 4 of the 5 water holes I drilled in the bottom of the barrel were plugged with tap roots as well. After I moved the barrel, I found these had already grown at least 2 feet under the barrel into the ground. Took some photos of the root ball after it was out to dissuade anyone who can plant into the ground to do it over barrels.

Only a little.

This is why I root prune every couple of years as deep as I can get. and, i plnated mine in contained boxes to keep them from migrating and giving me migraines.

they are considered invasive for a reason.
