I'm relatively new to brewing and decided to take a bit of a leap and threw together a porter recipe myself--it's pretty basic. Is it any good? Also, I have a question about the hops: I was planning on using Cascade and what they had at the LHBS are listed as 8.7% alpha, which is higher than I was expecting, so would using 2oz for the full 60 min. and 1 oz for the last 5 be too much? I don't want it to be too hoppy...anyway here's my planned recipe:

6.6 lbs amber LME
1 lb dark DME
1/2 lb chocolate
1/2 lb Black Patent
dry yeast

Steep grains in 3 gallons for 30 min. at 155 degrees fahrenheit
Remove grains and bring to boil, add extracts boil 60 min

hops

2 oz. cascade (8.7% AA) for 60 min
1 oz cascade (8.7% AA) for 5 min

Ferment about 2 weeks-ish (FG around 1.014)
Rack to bottling bucket, prime, bottle, and wait.

Here's what I got in Beersmith...

I'd say it's close enough. I was never one to adhere to rules. They're more like.... guidelines anyway...

I do think 8oz black patent is a bit much. It will come off more like a stout. Maybe try 2oz.

I wouldn't recommend Cascade hops for flavor in a porter. It will be out of place, and I think it will clash with your roasted malts. I would only consider Fuggles or Williamette for flavoring additions in a porter. That citrusy-grapefruit flavor is best in a beer that showcases it rather than one where it must compete.
