I have only brewed three batches so far. My kids got me a starter kit for Christmas. I have since added a lot more equipment but that's another thread. The first batch was a Brewer's Best kit from my LHBS. This is a very small store in a bad part of town. I have no idea how old it was. Brewed an American Cream Ale. Pitched with the kit's dry yeast packet sprinkled into the bucket. Did fine. The beer is OK. Too bitter for me. Bitter after taste. Probably old ingredients. The second kit came from Northern Brewer. A Honey Kolsch. I justed poured the Wyeast Activator into the carboy. Again, did fine. Pretty good activity after 18 hours. I bottled it a week ago. Yesterday I brewed a Double Chocolate Stout from Austin Homebrew Supply. I made a 1 1/2 liter starter in a growler using Palmer's instructions. I poured off the "beer" and had about 8oz of slurry. Put that into the stout and had vigorous fermentation in 6 hours. Now 30 hours later it's still going strong. I will make starters from now on.
