A starter kit is a pretty good way to go. You'll outgrow it all eventually, but inception can be daunting without a guide. So, a kit and a good book is a great start. Try How to Brew or Joy of Homebrewing.

That kit is very similar to what I started with, you may want to start with an ale for a batch or two before you hop into a lager though...kinda like crawling before you walk. If you go with a lager first, just do some reading to understand the fermentation temperature schedules etc.
