Smoky taste... yuk...

I've done about 4 partial mash batches now, a light, IPA, fat tire clone, and a hefeweizen... the IPA and fat tire turned out really good, but both the light and the hefe ended up with a smoky taste... I don't like it and am wondering what the cause could be? its almost like eating a hamburger made by someone who dumped too much liquid smoke on it... I'm scared to make another light beer or hefe for that matter...

Could be phenols...Hefe yeast naturally produces some phenols but I wonder if you're having a slight infection problem

What's the recipe for the smokey beers? That might give us a little more info to go on.

Since the problem is only in the very pale beers, could be a water problem

I think we need more information, such as fermentation temps, water profile, etc.

Smoky taste... yuk...
