I brewed a barleywine yesterday and evidently my efficiency was way down as I only got 1.088 OG. It is in the fermenter and going crÀzy. Is it possible or advisable to add some sugar to it (boiled and cooled of course) to up the abv?

Personally, I'd let it ride and taste it before messing with it, but you can add sugar or DME or anything else that's fermentable to the beer at pretty much any time.
