i have a first year plant that has been eaten a little by canker worms. Now that the canker worms are going away, i see red ants on the vine. Is that a problem? I heard that they are not necessarily that bad for a garden. Is this true? Any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks

By red ants, do you mean fire ants? Those little bastiches can make huge air pockets under you plants that will eventually kill the plant. It might not happen till after they have vacated, leaving you scratching your head wondering just what the he!! happened.

Hire some grey ants. Then get some green ants to get rid of the grey ones.

Get some of those baits. They are awesome! After a couple weeks, ants no more! But yeah, look for Aphids too. The ants could be companions to a colony of Aphids as they harvest the "honey dew" that the Aphids secrete.
