We all know that over carbing bottles will result in bottle bombs, but does anyone know roughly on average how many vols. of CO2 it takes to make a bottle explode? I know tolerances between different bottles will vary so I'm just looking for a ballpark average. Thanks

I've bottled a few batches of Hefeweizen in 12 oz bottles with 3.5 volumes. Only one bottle broke, it had a thin spot. I would say the avg limit for 12 oz bottles is somewhere between 4 and 5 volumes of CO2 depending on the bottle. Champagne bottles and Belgian bottles are designed to hold more pressure than avg bottles.

I know on the Brewing Network's "Brew Strong" and in "Brewing Classic Styles" 4 volumes seems to bee the magic number for 12-oz bottles. Anythin over that they recommend champagne.
