A 5 or 10 gallon cooler converted with a ball valve along with a long length of clear tubing makes a GREAT water level.

I'd use a garden hose with a short length of clear tubing on the end, but great idea all the same.
If this gets out SWMBO won't understand the need for another tool. Please let's keep this on the down low.

A water level? Pray tell, what is a water level?
it's a level that uses water instead of whatever a regular level uses...
an old contractor actually taught me the trick. it's helpful when installing a chair rail.

I believe the Egyptians are credited with this, they used trenches filled with water to level the pyramids.

What's great about a water level is that you and use it to get a reference over a large area. Set your cooler in the middle of a room and you can put reference marks on each of the walls that are all level with each other. Or if you're doing a fence or a deck, you can mark all your posts evenly.
A good laser level does the same thing, but going old school is funner sometimes.
