I just cleaned the inside of my brew pot with an s.o.s. pad, then boiled some water in it. Before I added water, I rinsed and dried it out so I don't see how any s.o.s. pad pieces could have still been in the pot. But alas...

Rust spots could't be removed with intense scrubbing with plastic brush. I don't want to use metal, as it would probably end the same way.

Is this just on the surface? Or was the stainless contaminated?

Pickup a can of "Bar Keeper's Friend". It's a cheap oxalic acid cleaner that will take it right off. In the future, only use the blue "non scratch" scrubbies, or a stainless sos pad.
