I bottled my first batch of beer the other night. My nut brown had an OG of 1.050 and an FG of 1.018. Is that ball-park-normal?
 
The final gravity is a little high.
How long did you let it ferment?
You may not have let it finish before you bottled.
3 weeks is the minimum for most ales.
Fermentation is usually complete in 7 to 10 days, but most leave their beer to condition.
