I'm brewing a cider as we speak, and the hydrometer (in hot pasturizing cider) reads a SG of 1.033, which is impossible. Other than a defective hydrometer, which worked fine for my last brew and calibrated at 1.000 in water, any idea why the reading is so low? The recipe is:
6 gal apple juice (no cider available here yet)
2 lbs 3 oz raw honey
2 lbs brown sugar
1 orange, juiced and zested
I figure this gives me an OG of about 1.070-1.080. I have not found a cider calculator online. Any help with the expected OG in this recipe?
It's chilling now, and will be pitched with WLP 720 sweet mead yeast in a 1L starter shortly, and will be spiced with cinnamon, allspice, and vanilla in the secondary. Thx for any help.
