how bad is brass??

so i know this has gone around a couple times but brass ball valves?? im building this sculture and i found 1/2" brass ball valves at home depot for 5 bucks, i heard somewere they are made with lead but arnt they supposedly for water lines??
 
they really aren't a concern. if you're still wary, you can pickle the brass first. google will explain the pickling process, as does www.howtobrew.com (the metalurgy section)

I just discovered that I have a harbor freight locally. Man are their prices cheap. You can really find some deals there. My first impression was that a shipping crate from China just puked everything it could into the store.
