Not sure if its the chloramine or chlorine that it removes but how long does the water need to sit before using it. I usually let it sit over night at an average of 18 hours or so. Is this long enough? Cheers!

Hm I would have to research I guess but I didn't know campden tablets helped remove neither chlorine nor chloramines. I think those will just evaporate out themselves if you leave it out long enough. Campden is for sulfiting the must isn't it? editing ... ok hm I didn't know about that use, it does say it eliminates chloramine and free chlorine.

One source I saw said it removes the chlorine within minutes, so if that's true it seems like your 18 hours should be plenty of time.

Chlorine will evaporate out in 24 hours or so.

Chloramine will not, hence you must use another method to get rid of it. (RO, campden, etc.)

What do you put the water in to store this overnight? An extra sanitized bucket or what?

I have two 5 gallon collapsible containers. They were $5 at Joe's. I transport my brewing water from my apartment to my parents where I brew They have softened water so its no good.

any old clean pot.
your going to be boiling it and campdem is potassium metabisulfite. Its what we put into musts to kill yeast and other critters. It IS a sanitizer.

Crush the tablet, put it in your bucket, and it'll be gone by the time your water is at mash/steep temperatures.

Hmm I do about 2 1/2 gallon boils so I would need an extra 3 or so gallons of water outside of whats in the pot. Would a sanitized lowes bucket work?

Her point was that this is all pre-boil. You can use any clean container to treat the water in, you don't need to sanitize it (unless you are talking about top off water and you don't boil your top off?)

For all grain:
1. put water in mash tun and hlt.
2. cut up and crush up campden tablet.
3. try not to look sketchy so your neighbors think you're doing lines off your kettle lid.
4. put crushed up tablets into mash tun and hlt
5. start mash tun burner and start brewing

For extract, just make sure that the tablets are in the water before it gets into the boil. so if you need extra water above what is in your kettle, any bucket etc. should work.
