Hey again eveyone. I am looking to buy a 50# bag of pale malt 2 row. I live in CT and am looking for something local that i can pick up? any suggestions. thanks all.

Rob's is in Salem, Zok's is in Willimantic. I've talked with both about getting full sacks, neither said that they keep them in stock all the time. Both gave me the same line about being able to order a sack, after which I would have to pay their price PLUS the shipping cost to the store. I placed a quick call to North Country Malt - shipping directly to my house would be cheaper for me than either store can do by about $20.

Perhaps you could take the short trip to Austin, or you could just go online.

Stopped in to Maltose yesterday. 50# typically $65.00 Some others like Maris 2-Row $80.00. Like the other posters mentioned, they are great folks to deal with, but they are a bit pricey.

Is it just me or why do many homebrewers seem to feel they are entitled to buy at wholesale? Do you call oil refineries to buy a tank of gas or a fishing boat to buy a few tons of swordfish?

Easy buddy - no sense of entitlement here. I simply made a call to a nearby place that I found online to inquire about buying a bag of grain. If they only sell wholesale, I have no issues going somewhere else. The answer to my question could have been a simple "Sorry, but we only sell wholesale" - not the ranting diatribe I got. Their web page says nothing about being a wholesale only operation.

I realize it's not local pick-up but...

I order all my stuff from North Country Malt Supply, who is importer for Fawcett, Bairds, and MFB, etc. It cuts out the middle man. But, you do have to setup an account with them, as all orders are hand-processed. They are a supplier for breweries large and small.

I order with the cheapest delivery option on Monday afternoon and it's normally here by Thursday.

55# top notch imported pale malts are $60 bucks with delivery... tops.

Prices, including shipping, generally work out to be $1.00-$1.25/lbs pale malts since I buy those in bulk, and $2.00-$2.50/lbs for specialty malts.

Hops usually work out to be $2/oz for noble hops.

They also are the distributor for other stuff like...
It's like $160 with shipping for 55# of soft Belgian candi.

+1 that Maltose Express is pricey...but then again, we're in CT.

I usually buy stuff from midwestsupplies and it comes out cheaper shipped, although I never bought 50 pounds of grain.

I just came across this thread. . . .

I've been getting 50 lbs sacks of grains from Maltose for $50 to $65 per.

The more expensive sacks are the grains that come from England and Belgium so it makes sense for a slightly higher price ( and those are actually 55 lbs ).

Since they've started their online store back in December 2012, they've started to adjust their pricing to be more competitive. If you order a grain mix online or at the store they charge $1.60/lb and will crush your grains free of charge if you request it.

They've also added to their line of equipment and now carry much of the Blichmann line. If they don't carry it, they track it down and will order it for you. They charge the same pricing for Blichmann's gear, and are sometimes less expensive, as other re-sellers.
