Carboy Question

Hey this could be really dumb, but how do you know where exactly 5 gallons is on the carboy. I would like to know this so when I add cold water to the wort I can know exactly when to stop. Any thoughts?

I would simply use tap water and measure it in, then mark the carboy so you are sure of your own. Even with plastic ale pails which are pre-marked, the markings are not always accurate.

It is a little pricey ($20/8oz. $ 30/16oz.) for the etching chemical but it's permanent, if you have a Michaels or Hobby Lobby in your area the offer 40% coupons regularrly, if not it is available at amazon.
