Boiling Lyle's Golden Syrup to make black treacle?

Anybody tried this?

It seems like it might work, since golden syrup and black treacle are just the early- and late-stage boiling products from the same process. (See http://www.recipes4us.co.uk/Specials and Holidays/Treacle Origin Uses Recipes.htm.)

I'd like to have some black treacle for my winter warmer, but I'd have to pay a bit to have the real thing shipped to me. Lyle's Golden Syrup, on the other hand, is available for $6 at the local supermarket.
