Hitting IBU Estimates in Published Recipes

I'm having trouble when I try to convert recipes from a magazine to my brewing software and hopefully someone can explain this. When I load a recipe from Zymurgy onto Beersmith for an IPA I'd like to make. The calculated IBUs are significantly less than the estimate they Published. I'm sure...

Reaching Target IBUs - BYO Vermont Cult Clones

Thanks, I might try extract. Ive been using a hop spider and have not had too many problems. Im still struggling with reaching the target IBUs.I loaded the recipe into BeerSmith and don't get the target gravity either. My homebrew shop loaded the recipe into their software and came out fine...

Reaching Target IBUs - BYO Vermont Cult Clones

I was excited to see an article in the most recent BYO magazine highlighting some popular beers from Vermont breweries. I had a chance to visit the Alchemist brewpub before they closed after Hurricane Irene in 2011, so thought I would try brewing one of the two clone recipes from the article...

    infection? (chocolate stout)

I had a similar experience with a chocolate stout I now have in secondary. I used about 8 oz. of chocolate in the boil though, but the OG and FG were both higher than I expected, the krausen was very small, looking very similar to the picture in this thread. Fermentation barely lasted 3 days...

    Whirlpooling Technique

Greetings. I just recently purchased a Blichmann boilermaker brew kettle with a hop blocker. I seem to have difficulty creating a whirlpool that will result in the hops dropping into the middle of the brew pot. I generally use a large spoon to try and get the whirlpool going, but keep...

    Blichmann Thermometer Issues

Hello All! I just purchases a 10 gal. Blichmann Brewpot and burner and tested them out this weekend. I noticed a problem with my thermometer in that it seems to only operate between 110 and 190 degrees. I read the cautions in the manual about excessive heat on the thermometer and used the...

Effect of One Step on Carboy

Hello, I've been using One Step to clean out my carboys, usually letting them soak full overnight. I'm noticing that a ring is forming at around the top of the carboy, that I can't get rid of. It almost looks like the small bubbles that rise up and out the top are clouding the glass. I'd...

    Cant hit Target Original Gravity

The recipe called for liquid (8 lbs) and dry malt (1 lb) extract. I steeped some grains at 155, per the recipe's instructions, for 30 minutes. Boiled for 60 minutes. The wort was at 73 when I checked the gravity. Thanks again.
