    Frozen Yeast Starter

Doh! So I made a beautiful 5.25L starter of Budejovice yeast. Pitched in 3 vials of yeast. 2 were close to their due date and one was past it's due date. Got great activity in 24 hours and was super stoked to brew my lager tonight. Just went to the fridge where I had it cold crashing to see...

    Homebrewer Firestone Collaboration...

So a barrel that I contributed too aged on bacteria at the Firestone Walker Barrelworks facility (all their sours, blended and premium barrels are made here) in Buelton, turned out awesome. They want to serve it at their Slolambic release in 2 weeks. If any of you make it come say hello. I'm the...

    Brewing with Wasabi...

So has anyone brewed with Wasabi? Please share what you know. As much detail as possible. I'm thinking of brewing a Wasabi Lager. I don't want it to overwhelm, but I think a good clean crisp lager with Sushi is awesome and I think a beer with that theme is in order...

NHC, Forgot which categories I entered

I entered the NHC through the registration window as instructed. At the time I was unsure what beers I'd enter, because I still had to brew a couple of them. Now I go back and the registration window is closed. This is my first NHC I've entered, and I'm not even sure if there's a contest...

Raspberry Pi or Arduino (for layperson)

I work in finance. But I did take a college course in Databases and was (at that time) very proficient in SQL and SQL+. I've also dabbled in basic and visual basic, though it's been some time. I understand language. I'm fluent in Spanish as well as English and I excelled in learning spanish at...

    leak in auto-siphon seal...

So I just racked a Vienna Lager, and used a brand new auto siphon to do so. I didn't notice until 2/3 of the way through that the seal in the auto siphon was leaking slightly and there were tiny air bubbles flowing through the siphon tubing into the beer. Since I was 2/3 done, I let it finish...

    Super fast Old Ale

So I just got the 2013 brew list for my brewclub, and the January meeting is in a little over 2 weeks. The January beer is "Old Ale" 19A. We do a monthly contest with the beer, and the top 3 get points toward a brewer of the year competition. I had pretty good success in the 3 competitions I...

    Mash out disaster...

So yesterday I was brewing with a change to my setup. I got a 10G SS Kettle that I am going to use as my Mash Tun going forward. Mistake 1, I got cocky and assumed I could not only brew with a changed setup without incident, I thought I'd go ahead and do a double batch to restock the pipeline...

off flavors reside in yeast cake or just in beer?

Sorry if this should be in the beginner forum, but I have a specific question that I thought the experts over here in the yeast forum might help with. When you pitch a yeast at too high of a temp, and you end up with unwanted esters and fusels....do those flavors STAY with the yeast cake...

    Refractometer reading pre-boil question....

So I usually use a refractometer for my preboil and OG readings, then switch to a hydrometer for my post fermentation readings. Yesterday I was brewing a blonde with an expected OG of 1.048 at 70% efficiency. Which I hit dead on. I batch sparge, and while the final runnings were being...

    Batch Sparging with Beersmith ...

So does anyone else batch sparge and notice that the beersmith batch sparge profile doesn't give you water temps for your mashout? In other words, it merely says: "Add 3 gallons 170F water" for a strike temp of 168. Which, when you add 3 gallons of 170F water for a strike temp of 168 to a...

    Purchasing grain for custom recipe...

I stumbled across a HBS online recently that allowed you to "build a recipe" in their software, then would hand pick and mill the grain bill for you (along with the other ingredients) so you could in effect build your own kit. Now I can't remember what site it was..I tried googling to no...

Brewing now. Are these hops bad?

They smell "ok". Nothing notable really, but they're warrior, so they are supposed to have a mild aroma. The picture is a pretty good representation, though some of the brown spots might be a bit darker then you see. Thanks in advance to any replies:

    Jamil's Belgian Dark Strong cloying

So I'm fermenting Jamil's "Brew Like a Homebrewer" Belgian Dark Strong. I'm using the WL Belgian Blend WLP575, because they didn't have the yeast Jamil called for in Brewing Classic Styles. When I input the recipe into Beersmith it tells me the expected FG is 1.017. My OG was 1.105 and...

    Mash Hop and Vorlauf...

So I did a bunch of firsts today. I like to get them all out of the way at once, so I can leapfrog right to competency (although it sometimes doesn't go exactly that way ;-) ). I did my first all-grain brew..and I attempted a batch of Pliny the Elder using this recipe (although I did make...

    Pitched at 100F...

I know, I know. And other then say that I was using a new plate chiller for the first time, and was distracted by the pride in remembering to use a "getter" magnet to retrieve the stir bar from my starter....I pitched into my fermentor THEN thought..crap...what's the wort temp? Sure enough it...
