    The 2016 NHC - Results/Speculation Thread

41 and Mini BOS for my light american lager, can't be unhappy with that, but oh so close! Probably didn't help that the same style won the gold (and he was the Ninkasi winner, to boot).

Survey of Award Winning BJCP Ciders - Please Submit Yours!

My best competition cider (and my favorite to drink) is a maple bourbon cider: Specialty Cider (Common Cider aged with bourbon-soaked oak) – Medium – Sparkling – 1st NERHBC 2013 (NH); 3rd NERHBC 2014 (NH); 1st NHC 1st round (KC), 2014 (made the cat. 28 mini BOS in the finals...

    The 2016 NHC - Results/Speculation Thread

Ha, well, the keg is drained (that was a very popular poker night brew for my bud-light loving friends), but I have three bottles tucked away in the lagering cooler, just in case. I won't drink them yet - thanks! :rockin:

    The 2016 NHC - Results/Speculation Thread

Yep I did - and that's the entry that's scored the best in other comps leading up to this one, so I figured it probably had the best shot. Do you have some inside info...?

    The 2016 NHC - Results/Speculation Thread

Argh. Looks like they updated the status info, changing Sacramento and St. Paul to "Verifying", but leaving Chicago and Denver as "verifying" as well. Haven't seen the list change more than once per day, so I'm guessing that means that it'll be another day at least until I learn my Chicago...

    Favorite Looking Homebrew Competition Medals

Got a nice one from the Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition. Also picked up a couple from MCAB, which as noted earlier are really nice.

    Favorite Looking Homebrew Competition Medals

The New England Regional has cool wood ones, custom engraved for each category and place. The comp has great prizes, too.

What came in the mail for you today?

It was the New England Regional Homebrew Comp. I went 7 for 10, my best batting average ever by far. That many placements also snagged me their brewer of the year prize (the bag of grain and some other stuff from Red Hook Brewery). Kudos to the host club, Brew Free or Die, for running an awesome...

What came in the mail for you today?

The best batch of swag I've ever received from a homebrew competition. The best item you can't even really see, but there's a 5 POUND bag of Apollo hops in there - whee! :rockin:

    Easy Bottling from a Keg

This is the method I've used for awhile, and it works very well for me. After a bit of adjustment to get the sweet spot of pressure that fills the bottle fairly quickly but generates just a bit of foam to cap on top of, away I go. For beer that I'm going to drink or give to friends, i just fill...

The 2014 NHC First Round - Results/Speculation Thread

Got my sheets from KC today - My CAP scored 29.5 and didn't advance (but as consolation, took a silver in another comp last weekend) My Maple Bourbon Cider scored 39 and won category 28. Very psyched about that - first time I've ever advanced anything to the second round. I'm going to go...

What's the worst craft brew (commercial) you've had?

For me, it's any Sam Adams beer with any fruit flavoring (cranberry lambic, cherry wheat, blackberry wit, etc.). The flavor always tastes like chemicals, not fruit, and is always terrible. Anytime my wife buys one of their variety packs I cringe, because I know there will be at least two beers...

Has anyone had this problem with Winware kettles?

Yep - it actually turned out much better than I expected. I'd installed a sight glass from brewhardware.com some time previously, and the connection between it and the pot had apparently started leaking a bit (probably due to me drilling the hole 1/16" too large). The leaked wort accumulated...

    FedEx opened package!

I ship all my entries using FedEx Ground, print the label at home, and pay the extra $3.00 to have FedEx come pick it up at my house. I figure I save the $3 in gas and time not having to drop it off, and the driver's not going to bother inspecting the package and opening it when no one is...
