Colorado Automated, 3-vessel 30-gallon Electric HERMS

I have an electric, 3-vessel, HERMS system for sale. Hot liquor tank and kettle have 6500W electric heating elements in them, mashtun (with custom, full size false bottom) recirculates through the hot liquor tank for mash rest temperature automation within .5 degrees C. 30 gallon kettle means...

    Sour Stout

So with Tart of Darkness I basically don't get anything other than just sourness. I'm looking to recreate something more along the lines of Crooked Stave's Dark Origins or Nightmare on Brett, where the beer tastes rich and full, with actually chocolatey malt notes coming in behind a beer that's...

Let's see some beer pics you've taken!

I'm one of those annoying nerds that takes pics of his beer (and I'm guessing many of you are as well). I feel like I've grabbed a few good ones over the last couple years so I wanted to share them here and see what other good pics my homebrew friends might have nabbed! I've got way too many to...

Temp controller broke, Froze 10 gallons of beer solid.

Safe to say this is a throw away batch? I've never froze beer before but I can't imagine it'll be homogeneous after it thaws...... I think it was done fermenting before it froze but I'm not 100% sure. For the sake of discussion let's say it was done fermenting. Should I even bother kegging and...

    Outfit for pro brewing interview?

Hey all! I was lucky enough to score an interview early next week with a local brewery! How should one dress for an event like that? Usually I would rock a suit and tie but I feel like brew masters are an odd bunch... Should I just wear my A-game and not worry about being overdressed?

Colorado For sale: Full size 2-Tap Kegerator with drip tray

I have a 2 tap kegerator I converted from an old fridge with two perlick taps on it and a drip tray. In good condition, keeps beer cold, and has room for 2 kegs plus a CO2 tank. You could fit 3 kegs in there with a little work to avoid the compressor hump but I haven't gotten around to doing...

In search of the perfect spring time Belgian. Advice and comments please!

Ok, Looking for the perfect Belgian beer to welcome in the changing of seasons. Here's what I have so far, let me know if it sounds reasonable! I'm trying to keep the spices and herbs subtle so as to not overpower the delicious backbone of a Belgian Golden Strong Ale. Style Name: Golden...

What sort of change should be expected from a bigger false bottom?

So I've been brewing in my new system with a 10" false bottom, cannibalized from my old cooler MLT. My new MLT is 19.5" in diameter so I realized that was sort of silly and my new custom false bottom with dip tube should arrive in the mail any day so I'm wondering what sort of change I can...

Is there anything better than a flawless brew day?

You know the days I'm talking about. You nail your mash temp perfectly, sparge volume perfect. Post-boil volume is spot on with the recipe, and OG is exactly what you predicted. Nothing spills, boils over, clogs, jams or breaks. Is there any better feeling in the world? I just had another day...

When a great beer doesn't place in a competition....

Is it actually a great beer? I have a batch of English Old Ale that I thought was by far my best beer to date. It was just phenomenal to my taste, and if I could have bought it in a bar I would have blown an entire paycheck on it. Roommates and friends thought the same. Entered into a...

Toffee in the boil. Asking for trouble?

Seems like it would be an incredible flavor as a sugar addition in the boil, but I know it's almost half butter in a good recipe. Is that quantity of lipids in the boil going to completely ruin the beer? Edit: sorry for the double post. On my phone, and it hates me.

Is toffee in the boil a recipe for disaster?

Seems like it would be an incredible flavor as a sugar addition in the boil, but I know it's almost half butter in a good recipe. Is that quantity of lipids in the boil going to completely ruin the beer? Edit: sorry for the double post. On my phone, and it hates me.

Small False Bottom in Huge Mash Tun. Efficiency Woes?

Ok so I used to mash in a 10 gallon igloo cooler which worked great for 10 gallon batches. However, I recently built this beautiful son of a gun; Thing is, it's got a 25 gallon mash tun, and I'm still using my 10" false bottom from my igloo cooler. Last night I made 15 gallons of a 1.090...

Do you guys fill out EVERYTHING on a competition entry form?

General Dates Specific Gravities Fermentables: Malt Extracts Fermentables: Grain Fermentables: Adjuncts Hops Mash Schedule Water Treatment Yeast Culture Yeast Nutrients Carbonation Boil Fermentation Finings Brewer's Specifics Is all that necessary? It says " the more...

BGSA yeast comparison results; more confusion.

Ok so the results are in! I had made a 5 gallon batch with just 12lbs pale malt, tettnanger hops, and 2lbs turbinado sugar. Nice, simple recipe to really let the yeast shine. I split the batch between 4 different white labs strains, 500, 530, 550 and 570. Out of my panel of taste testers...

    Is my Mash-Tun TOO big?

Hey all, so I've come across the option to have a 25 gallon mash tun in my single-tier electric stand for the same price as a 20 gallon mash tun. I usually do 10 or 15 gallon batches, since my BK is 25 gallons and my HLT is 20, just so you know. My debate here is whether or not there's a...

    Let's talk belgian!

So I'm gearing up to brew my spring beer, which I'm thinking will be a Belgian along the lines of a strong golden or a tripel. I can't really find a clearly defined difference between the two styles, nor does it bother me much, because Duvel and Chimay White are both excellent beers (I also...

Will this fit in my mash tun?

Trying to make an imperial pumpkin pie ale that I made last year on my 5-gallon system. The issue is that I just completed my brand new single-tier electric system, so I want to make 15 gallons of this and my mash tun is only 20 gallons. So for a grain bill of 47.15lbs, at an infusion rate...

    Thoughts on WLP009 "Australian Ale"?

So I've been trying to find a nice yeast for my Imperial Pumpkin Ale, but this thread isn't really about that.... I found a vial of WLP009 buried and lost in the back of the fridge at my LHBS. Since it's the March seasonal yeast and fully expired they gave it to me for free. My starter for it...

Almost done with my 1/2BBL single-tier

Here's the pic from tonight before I drilled and installed my HERMS coil. Gonna mount both heating elements and hook up the control panel tomorrow and I should be brewing by this weekend! More pics to come! HUGE thanks to the HBT community for this one. I couldn't have done it without some...
