    Over Active Fermentation

Greetings, So I brewed 9 days ago. After all this time, I still have bubbles in my airlock every 3 seconds. I've brewed a dozen batches or so and never encountered this. Is it possible to over ferment and produce a dry, bodyless beer? With every other batch, fermentation died down after...

    Hops are not better!

I agree. At the beer fest, and of 75 beers or so, I'd say almost half were IPAs or related. I also agree that the industry is very hung up on hoppy beers. Could just be a fad. Maybe it will blow over eventually. ;)

    Spiced Pumpkin Porter

If temp was 80+ it might have killed the yeast. Try dumping another packet in there and see what happens. Yes, you can take the lid off for a few minutes to do this. :)

    Too early for pumpkin ales?

I just brewed a pumpkin ale last weekend. Ready in a month or so. Like what the last poster said, you're a homebrewer: brew what you want when you want!

    Competition Results

Are those comments from a certified judge or a novice? Look at the top of the score sheet it should tell you. A novice can literally be anyone and their comments should be taken with a grain of salt. I know as I just judged my first comp as a novice. :). BJCP certified judges opinions should...

10k USD to start a home brewing business. Possible?

Here's a link from Oregonlive which interviews several nano breweries: http://www.oregonlive.com/mix/index.ssf/beer/nano-breweries-put-great-care-into-little-batches.html There are links to others at the bottom of the page. They might be helpful if you contact them. I've done a lot of...

    Your LHBS

The closest LHBS to me has annoyed me lately. They are always trying to "downsell" me on something, or start a "this vs. that" debate. I walk in for a glass fermenter, they try to sell me plastic. I walk in for liquid yeast, they try to sell me dry packets. etc. So I started shopping...

    Hop Pellets and Panty Hose

I did notice that the nylons were very green colored at the end of the boil. Absorbed hop oil perhaps? Several folks on this thread have mentioned "hop trub". If this hop trub enters the fermenter, than aren't you essentially dry hopping? Or is this trub completely inactive providing no...

    Hop Pellets and Panty Hose

I've read several threads on this forum suggesting that using ladies nylons as a hop sock is OK. But has anyone ever noticed a decreased hope aroma/flavor while using nylons? My LHBS was out of whole leaf hops, so I used hop pellets for the first time about a month ago to make an American...

Why 1.5x the boil for a brewpot?

Notice who is actually making that recommendation? The mfg'er of the kettle ;) I've seen some mfg'ers recommend 2x and some 1.5x. There is no effect on hop utilization. So long as you aren't boiling over all the time, use what makes you happy :ban:

    Best compliment youve ever recieved

I took a corny keg of my summer blonde to a 4th of July party. It was sitting next to an ice chest of BMC. After the party I checked what was left: My keg was empty, the cooler was still full.

    Blow off tube frustration

I have a 4' length of 1/2" blow off tube. I got it from my LHBS where it was coiled up on a large spool. It's quite old now, but still wants to coil. I run it from my carboy to a small bucket of water. I coil the tube at the bottom of the bucket trying to prevent it from coiling up and...
