New burners for my 3 tiered stand

When we moved 5 years ago I found 2 burners, but where they came from I have no idea. I had a leaking valve the last time I brewed so I decided to replace the burners while I had everything taken apart. Here's the new burner, and the old one is sitting on the side. Hopefully I'll be able to...

    Ales for ALS

https://a4a.als.net/about/ My sister lost her husband to ALS 2 years ago, and since then she has essentially dedicated her life to fighting for ALS patients AND their families. She recently talked to some brewers who have participated in this Ales for ALS progra.

    Cured pork tenderloin

We're going to the neighbors for aperitif, a quaint French custom originally designed to have a pre-meal snack and separate the dinner guests from the "come by for a drink" guests. The salami is made by a local sausage maker and it's excellent. The tenderloin is eaten with a chunk of...

    Google Earth Pro issue

A couple of years ago I clicked something on google Earth Pro and have had a huge red X covering North America. Does anyone here know how to get rid of the X. I've tried deleting and re-installing Earth Pro but it appears to be embedded in Google and so it can't be deleted. I can look at the...

My hops survived and are thriving

I grew hops for years in Carlsbad NM, a truly inhospitable place for hops because of the summer heat and dryness. When we moved to Silver City, much higher in elevation and much cooler I brought my rhizomes, and they all died immediately. The past 3 springs I've bought plants or rhizomes, the...

    Soup

Raised on the Gulf Coast we had 2 kinds of soup-Campbells Cream of Mushroom for casseroles and Chicken Noodle for when nobody wanted to cook food. In the Southwest we make posole with green chile, pork and hominy. But I never really understood soup until spending this fall in France. My wife...

Nephew in France wants to brew

I'm not new but one of my French nephews wants to start brewing. I'm here to help him but finding brewing equipment here is not easy. Does anybody here have any good info on French homebrewing suppliers? Thanks

Life in a small French village for an old American

I married a French woman with a very large family 41 years ago and we've visited almost every year so this is a long term observation. First of all, French people in this area of France love life. Life revolves around family and community, much more so than in anyplace I've lived in the US...

    Korbinian disappointed me

Korbinian used to be one of my top German beers. But yesterday I drank one that I recently purchases, and it was very disappointing. It was syrupy, way too sweet to be enjoyable. I don't blame the beer, it's probably my tastes that have changed since I last drank one. but it was a sad experience.

    High altitude brewing tips

For more than 25 years I brewed at 3100 feet, but we moved and I'm about to brew my first batch in 3 years, Our new house sits at 6213'(1980m) and I'm wondering if any of y'all can give me tips on extending boil times or anything else I haven't figured out yet.

How much driving around do you do for a better deal on booze?

Luckily I live in a very small town and I'm retired so I have time to research it. Albertson's grocery store is where I buy my wines-best selection and far cheaper than anywhere else in town, but their beer selection is not great and their whiskey prices are outrageous. Walmart has Bacardi...

The music that shaped my life.

All my life I have loved music, but the only musical instrument I ever learned to play was the stereo. I'm going to post links to the music that shaped my musical tastes, pretty much in chronological order. Feel free to add your musical history. My sister loved this band , and since she had a...

Shut down leisure activities-what are y'all doing to pass the time?

What are you doing to keep yourselves busy these days? I live in the hills of southwest New Mexico so I'm hiking a lot and taking pictures of the local wildlife. I'm retired but my wife works for the schools so she may be off until the fall, they're still trying to decide whether to start...

Prostate issues: a public service announcement

About 5 years ago I started having prostate issues. I found a urologist, he spent 3 years and a ton of my money trying to prove I had cancer. In the meantime I had 2 episodes of massive kidney infection that caused septicemia resulting in multi day stays in the hospital on high powered IV...

4 packs of 16 ounce versus 6 packs of 12 ounce

How many of you prefer one over the other? I'm not a fan of paying more for 4 cans and getting less beer, but some of my favorite beers only come in the 4 pack format. For instance I can buy a sixer of Santa Fe Happy Camper for $8 or a 4 pack of La Cumbre Elevated IPA for $10. Both are great...

    Remote control overload

I'm an old guy and I need tech help. I live out in the middle of nowhere and have Direct TV and satellite internet. My wife wanted Netflix and I had to get an Amazon Fire Stick because for some reason our TV's are too old and not compatible. So now I have remotes for Direct, the TV, and Fire...

    Grounds in my cup.

I've been grinding beans and making pour-over coffee for 40 years. Suddenly I can't brew a cup of coffee without significant debris in my cup. I've used the same grinder and grind for 3 years, same funnels for 2 years. I switched from BrewRite filters to Melita, no change. I've tried folding...

Does boiling temp affect hops utilization?

As I was brewing an IPA last weekend I had a question I don't think I've asked in my 26 years of brewing. How does boiling temp affect hops utilization? I live at 3100' and the boiling point here is around 203F, not 212F. Does this make any difference as far as hops are concerned? It s...

    Mead tasting 12/30/2017

My daughter likes sweet meads and mentioned to her baby daddy that I made meads, something he had never really even heard of. We started with a braggot from 2007 made from the second runnings of a porter and 10 pounds of honey. I was surprised at how good it was after 10 years in the laundry...
