    Water Filter

I put this together last year, got it at Lowe's, simple, easy, works. I'm using an RV hose, not sure if its needed but I'd rather have it just to be sure. The copper on the outlet runs to the bottom of the HLT. I'm proud of it.

    My SCT-1000 Fermentation Temp Controller

I've seen some temp controller builds, thought I'd share mine. I built this last spring, had a contractor buddy look it over before putting it into service. Works beautifully. I like it, alot. I've got the cool/heat sockets plus a dual socket that is always on for a fan and whatever else I may...

8 gallon Coleman mash temp variations

I mash in an old Coleman cooler(8 gallons) and I've noticed huge temp differences in areas of the cooler. Corners are different from the center, bottom different from the top. I stir like a ***** and still variances. Anybody else have this problem? It can differ as much as 6 degrees around...

    Rahr White wheat modification/mash question

I'm making a sort of roggenweizen(recipe from brewing classic styles) and want to know if I need a protein rest with Rahr's white wheat. I'm using 25% of the fermentables from white wheat, 25% rye, 50 % 2 row. Wondering what my mash schedule should be. Thinking a beta rest with a protein rest...

Small electric setup. Need some advice.

I have been thinking about putting together a small(1-2 gallon) electric all grain setup to use in the winter because using my big burner in the garage isn't an option and neither is brewing in the house. I found some hot plates on sale and plan to make a small electric brew sculpture for the...

    White spots on a Barleywine.

I brewed a barleywine 9 months ago and have moved it 4 times(from primary to secondary to tertiary to whatever) and have kept a very clean environment but after the 9 months in carboys I have recently seen two white spots about the size of an eraser head on top of the barleywine. I've kept...

    Black Walnut Robust Porter

I put together a Robust Porter recipe and plan on using some walnuts I got from my friends place. Whats the best way to use walnuts in a beer? I was thinking about roasting them and putting them in the mash. Any advice?

How do I use this hop spider I built?

I built a nice hop spider and have been wondering how best to use it. I wonder if the nylon bag will just float to the top. I haven't used it yet. Is it best to put a bit of stainless steel or maybe copper in the bag to keep it from floating to the top during the boil? What is the best way...

Just starting all grain, wish me luck.

I have been brewing with extract and have done some partial mashes. Helped a buddy with his first all grain batch. I've been using Designing Great Beers to figure my numbers out and have done it all with a pencil and pad so I hope it all works out. I think I'm gonna do a Pumpkin Ale for my...

Old Coleman Metal Cooler. Suitable Mash Tun?

I've acquired an old(80's maybe) coleman cooler. Metal outside, metal latch. Older style cooler. I was wondering if anyone has used a decades old cooler and if they are good at holding temps. My assumption is they will lose heat more rapidly than some of the newer ones. Is there a good way...

    Too late to transplant?

I grew a few hop rhizomes last year in 5 gallon buckets using potting soil and they did great for 1st year plants. They were left outside all winter with the bines up. The bines were clipped down to the soil in late March. I have them all in the same soil as last year right now but want to...

Extract O.G. missed by a mile! HELP!

I created my own Pale Ale recipe using beer-calculus and missed my estimated O.G. of 1.051 by .020! I ended up with 1.071! I can't figure out what happened. I ended up adding another gallon post boil to bring it to 1.058. I do full boils starting with 6 gallons and boiling down to 5. Here is...

How do you feel about Hopville?

I've put together a few recipes using hopville and i'm wondering about the accuracy of the calculations. I was thinking about running the recipe numbers by hand and have used some other calculators with slightly varied results(brewmasterswarehouse, recipator, tried using beersmith can't figure...

    Extract Barleywine recipe questions

My buddy and I are putting together a Barleywine extract w/ specialty grains recipe and I wanted to post it and get some feedback and ask a few questions. We're still working on it but I just want to see if its heading in the right direction. It's the first time we've put a recipe together from...
