    Too smooth, too round?

Thanks, ghpeel. I'm definitely not shocked that it's a tad sweet, as you pointed out, there's a good bit of caramelized malts in there. I'm hoping that better carbonation puts a bit more "pop" in this one. Cheers!

    Too smooth, too round?

I recently tried to brew the Zombie Dust clone refined by SkeezerPleezer et al. on this thread. LHBS didn't have the required Grain for the specified grist, so I made the following subs: subbed Victory for Melanoidin, subbed Carapils for Carafoam, and subbed 1.44 of MO in for some of the...

    Advice for upgrading my setup

I have a very similar setup to you, except I have a keggle in place of your 8 Gal pot, and I use a submersible pond pump to circulate chilling water. My next upgrade will be a fermentation chamber. Probably get a CraigsList mini-fridge, build it out with plywood and foam, and build the famous...

    New burner trials

Temperature of liquids cannot be increased past their boiling point because at this point they're no longer liquids. However, the boiling point of a material depends on the atmospheric pressure. This is why water boils at a lower temperature at higher elevations. In a pressure cooker, the local...

    New burner trials

Hahaha, vaporization of liquid water by evaporation and transpiration (biological evaporation occurring from leaves) is sort of my wheel house (I model ecosystem water and carbon fluxes). Glad it was helpful info.

    New burner trials

Boiling and evaporation are not the same, even though they both result in the vaporization of liquid. Evaporation occurs only from the surface of a liquid at a rate determined by the amount of thermal energy in the liquid and the vapor pressure deficit, or the relative "dryness" of the air. In...

    Simplest (?) Keggle Cutting Jig

Here's what I did. It's pretty darn simple, but may not work with your grinder.

Pond Pump Wort Chiller Connection Instructions

I have the EcoPlus 396GPH model ($25 shipped) and the flow through my 30' 1/2" OD IC is way more than adequate. I held the IC over my head with the pump on the floor and the flow rate was not obviously affected.

    sanke spear mash paddle.

I started to do this (you may be able to tell) and then stopped because I realized that without welding/soldering the seam, I'd never get it leakproof. In which case wort and grain could easily get stuck in there and fester because there's no good way to clean it out. So I just left it open.

    sanke spear mash paddle.

I thought this was a clever project and decided to give it a go. I made some simple modifications that I think ease the construction and don't require welding or soldering. I just cut along the length of the spear with a hacksaw, then about 3/4 of the way through the spear where the lengthwise...

    NB Le Terroir

I'm right down the road in Hillsborough. I'll be knocking on your door in 1 years time. Le Terroir is one of my favorites.

    Yet another priming sugar thread

Thanks for the advice, Dschuetz. I have no idea what's going on with that formula either, definitely counterintuitive. I put my beers in a plastic container with a lid, and I'm just going to monitor them and see how it goes. The most interesting thing to me was the difference in how much...

    Yet another priming sugar thread

I bottled my first batch yesterday, a 2.5 gallon (2.1 yield) batch of IPA. Regarding priming sugar, Palmer's book says: "boil 3/4 cup of corn sugar (4 oz by weight), or 2/3 cup of white sugar ..." Since I was bottling a 2.5 gallon batch, I used 1/3 cup of pure cane sugar. This does not seem to...
