    Cider Contamination?

My cider stinks and taste like vinegar and has some very foamy and large bubbles on the top when it ferments. Its almost like the kind of foam you see in a creek after it floods. The smell of it when I lifted the lid to siphon actually hurt my nose. Does that means shes contaiminated?

Who's had an infection? A show of hands.

I think my cider might be infected, I made it from clear apple juice and the first batch turned muddy and smelled like ****, the second batch smells like vinegar from the airlock but I can see it because its in a bucket. If it stinks like vinegar is it ruined? (found a piece of mold half the...

    Yeast Starter Dead?

k, I accidently fell asleep and left this vial of yeast in the freezer and it froze but then I moved it to the fridge for a couple weeks then let it sit out for 3 hours so I'm still worried I froze the yeast to death.

    Yeast Starter Dead?

I pitched my yeast into a sanitized patron liquor bottle and then airlocked it last night at about 11:30 and then woke up and looked at it around 11:00 and it is not fermenting, however there is trub in the bottom. I used white labs yeast and some cider to get it going. Do you guys think it is...

    "Oxygen transmissiblity of Plastic"

haven't used it yet, I plan to use it for my first all grain. No leak on the inside, peer close and you can see a 7/16 o-ring. As for the trub that will settle below the opening of the pvc on the inside, I plan on using the cap from a juicy juice bottle to block trub from settling below the...

    7 Gal MLT

All grain adds up quick, and so far my calculations don't show any reduced price over time. Oh well, it is more fun than extract (so far) and thats all that matters.

    7 Gal MLT

I checked: Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardare, Gander Mountain, Sears, Meijer, and of course Wal-Mart and have been unable to locate it. If only Lowes sold it, then I could use my employee discount on it.

    7 Gal MLT

I read that a 5 gallon water keg isn't large enough for all AG recipes. Would a 7 gallon water be able to handle all recipes? They are much cheaper than a 10 gallon one. http://www.rubbermaid.com/rubbermaid/ecommerce/product.jhtml?prodId=HpdProd160026&catId=HpdCat160023

    Frozen Yeast

I left my white labs yeast in the fridge overnight on accident and it is now frozen, will the yeast be killed by this or will it still be good to use?

    Cider Questions

heh, I'm familiar with the website. However it may not be illegal because you technically are NOT making a distilled beverage. You are simply distilling out a dangerous substance and throwing it out, you would not run the entire batch of cider through the still. I'll have to check into the...

    Cider Questions

anyone try distilling out the methanol with a pot still though?

    Cider Questions

I had my friends home made cider and I got the only hangover I have ever had in my life. I think this is due to the high levels of methanol in it. Anyone way to remove the methanol without pot distilling it and pitching out the first 100 mL or so? If not I'm down to build a little science...

    Cider Questions

It's going to be a ***** finding a way to pasturize around 25-50 gallons of cider. You think a plastic garbage can would function as a carboy? There would probably be alot of air in there and I'm worried about contamination.

    Cider Questions

I have made beer and mead before but I have never tried cider. Do you have to boil it like you do everything else to kill off bacteria to an acceptable level? Is there any good sites to read up on making it? The reason I ask is I have been wanting to make a bulk batch of something and cider...
