    Using old yeast

I decided to brew this weekend and picked up some oldish yeast from the lhbs. Its wlp023 - Burton Ale. Dated best by 1/1/15, so I figure that puts my mfg date at 9/1/14. When I plug this into the yeast calculator, it states viability 0.00%. Is this right? What now? Buy more yeast? Just pitched...

    Beersmith 2 Ginger snap ale

I did neither. This was before my starter days. I pitched a smack pack, realized it wasnt enough after it didnt go, and pitched another. I could pull it off now, but then, not so much. Each piece that Ive built has had utmost importance, but stirplate singlehandedly transformed the quality of my...

    Beersmith 2 Ginger snap ale

Brewed this last year. Was my first big beer and my first attempt with liquid yeast. Beer had great flavor. Tasted wonderful. But I horribly underpitched the yeast and so it never quite got right. This brew is what drove me to build a stirplate and start doing starters. My advice obviously is...

Yeast starter step up : Flask size

Getting ready to brew a somewhat bigger than normal beer, a Winter Warmer. Its going to be about 8.4-8.5% abv and is starting with an orig grav of 1.080. Brewers Friend and Yeastcalc both say I need 402 billion cells. They also say that I can do this with my stirplate doing a 1L starter...

Hey guys. I was all pumped for a brew day today and smacked my yeast packet this morning. Now its decided to rain. What should I do now? Cant do the boil on the burner because the rain would get all in it. How long will the yeast pack be good for? What should I do if I cant brew until next...

    Stir plate build help

Hey guys. Im working on building a stir-plate and am running into an issue. Using the directions at stirstarters.com, http://www.stirstarters.com/instructions.html, they suggest a 2k ohm potentiometer. Radio Shack has bigger ones and smaller ones, but none exactly 2k ohm. Can I substitute a...

Noob accident; Will my batch be bad?

Nope, you're good. You'll make beer and it'll drink. May have a little different hop profile but it'll be ok. No worries.

    Compression fittings for wort chiller

I've found that if I heat the chiller up in boiling water, or wort for that matter, then I can really tighten down the worm clamps and get rid of any leaks.
