    WL840 Jan 10 2016 Viability Concern

Hello friends! I'm freaking out a little bit. I just bought a white labs 840 "pure pitch" soft pack of liquid yeast from the local homebrew store, only to realize the best use by date being july 8, 2016, and a manufacture date of jan 10, 2016. I went over to mr. malty to see how big of a...

First All Grain Brew Tomorrow Looking for Any Last Insight

Reporting back. I think it was pretty successful. Here are my notes: - Heated strike water (~5 gallons) to 182F and added to mash tun. It took about 15 minutes of stirring and closing the lid to get the temp down to my mash in temp of 164. Added a tbsp of 5.2 stabalizer. - Added my 12.6 lbs of...

First All Grain Brew Tomorrow Looking for Any Last Insight

This is the strategy I was going for. I may not have been really clear. So sounds like I need more like 185F as opposed to my 172F value I pulled out of my ass.

First All Grain Brew Tomorrow Looking for Any Last Insight

Hey, thanks for the advice. Here was where I was going with the temperature stuff. I was incorrect with the sparging temp mind you. I want to add 172 degree water to the mash tun so that I can acclimate the mash tun to hit around 164F. This is the calculation I have for my amount of grains...

What is whirlpool and what is Denny's favorite yeast ? :) Edit: Just looked up whirpooling. I'm definitely going to try that this time around.

    IPAs and Me Soap Suds

That makes total sense. Maybe it's not the bitterness that I'm enjoying. Maybe it's the aroma, thus i should put as much of that in at the end as possible. Hrrrrmm... You have my mind cranking right now. Nice nice. I guess I'll have to look through some clones recipes for beers I like and see if...

    IPAs and Me Soap Suds

Well one more post. I'm looking for a solid IPA recipe to try. All grain if possible. Anyone have any good ones? tried and true? Doesn't have to have massive IBU or anything. I just want to try a brew that someone else has approved of and see if I can get decent results.

    IPAs and Me Soap Suds

Sounds like a decent theory to me. I'll give it a shot and let you know the next time I try an IPA. It'll be a while though... Ales and Dark beers for winter :) Yum Thanks for the help folks! :mug:

    IPAs and Me Soap Suds

I usually just throw the beer into a fermenter and putting it in my chest freezer at a good temp for the yeast and let it be for 3 weeks. Then I go straight to keg. So you're saying I should try to strain as much hop and trub crap out when adding the wort to my fermenter? That I can do...

    IPAs and Me Soap Suds

I've tried to make a decent IPA twice now, and I always end up getting a beer that tastes like soap. Not bitter at all, just soapy tasting. Here's my last recipe I tried: It was supposed to be a Cali Red IPA: I believe this was for a 10 gallon batch. "Grain: 8oz American Two-row Pale...

The guy at the home brew store said he didn't even worry about this stuff. I bought some ph tester sticks (little plastic things that have a color square on them) and some 5.2 ph stabalizer. I'll probably up a tea spoon into the mash and see how that goes. I'm going to be using spring water...

First All Grain Brew Tomorrow Looking for Any Last Insight

So I built myself a circular mash tun from one of those 10 gallon rubber made coolers (The orange ones). I've tested it for leaks. Seems to be ready to go. I'll be doing this recipe: http://hopville.com/recipe/825852 My plan is to batch sparge. I plan on heating up my strike water to ~172F...

5 gallon extract to 10 gallon extract

I found a recipe I'm going to stick with for a while. I recently purchased a 15 gallon brew pot. Man is it huge. I'm assuming I can double all of the ingredients and also how much water to boil with (for a partial boil). My question is what if I want to do a full boil now since I can? Here's the...

    What would be the difference?

I think your question is, why bring the steeped liquid up to a boil, just to cool it down again and add the LME/DME... I say screw it, here's my process: 1. Steep the grains 2. Sparge the grains (using a strainer) 3. Add 1/4 to 1/2 of my extract. OFF the heat to prevent burning. 4. Boil...

    Is This Bad?

They will turn out fine. Just next time, let it sit in the primary until you get a stable FG. Or hell, just don't even rack at all... I don't. I still get clear beer.
