    How sanitary/aseptic are we?

I actually wanted to ask this a while back. I'm a bit of a germ-a-phobe myself and guard myself against putting anything in a fresh brew so I go to these extremes too, nearly to the 'T' as you. I even wear a bandana to prevent any stray (balding) hairs from falling in. But it tastes good! :mug:

    Help with oxiclean

I don't mean to be a bear, I've used oxi-clean on some older bottles I've recently acquired to get the gunk out of the bottle itself but never to de-label them. Do the labels pose any sort of hazard to the beer itself or is it simply an aesthetics thing?

Normal amt of yeast in bottles

Before bottling my first batch, an Autumn Amber Ale from Midwest, I cold crashed for a couple days and noticed the beer is pretty clear but has very little yeast in the bottles themselves, adding to the carbing time. I just bottled my Caribou Slobber Brown ale from Northern and did not cold...

    Shoutout to Austin HomeBrew

I just wanted to throw a shoutout to Austin HomeBrew Supply. I ordered a 24 pack of bottles tuesday and I got all 24, unbroken with an awesome recipe pad for my future batches today. Granted I only live 3 hrs away in DFW, for the speed and efficiency, I highly recommend any newbies, such as...

    Super Snow Bowl in Dallas

While the snow and ice is preventing me from doing anything fun in either Ft Worth or Dallas this week, I have the cracking open of my first home brew to look forward to.:ban: Has anyone else been able to get out and see either the ESPN setup in Ft Worth or the NFL experience in Dallas? It's...

Barrel Porter, 1/2 Rum and 1/2 Bourbon?

I know quite a few have tried the Northern Brewer bourbon barrel porter recipe with the standard Maker's Mark. Has anyone tried using a dark rum instead? I thought about racking half and half to 2 secondaries and trying a combo and see. Any thoughts? Would you even mess with such a great recipe?

How much heat does fermentation produce?

Rough math, depending on attenuation, say at 100%, 5 liters (1 gallon) of ethanol contains roughly 100 MJ of energy. So in a 5 gallon batch, about 500 MJ is collected, equating to 475k BTU's. While sleeping, humans produce about 250 BTU's / hr. If the full 475k BTU's are collected over a...

    Double recipe advice...help

I'm actually brewing that exact kit Saturday! There was another thread on here about splitting up a 10g brew into two 5g carboys. I'm sure the same will work splitting up a 5g brew. Just fill up the first primary to the ~2.5g mark and then fill second primary. Mix wert well though before...

Counter Flow Chiller vs Plate chiller

I still have an old CPU water cooling system complete with pump and radiator w/ attached fan. A little :off: but has anyone tried this method of cooling, would you even? Assuming everything was clean, sanitized and working w/ no leaks, I see some potential
