What's your occupation: Engineer or Non-Engineer

I've got my BSME from Tennessee Technological University back in '07. I think us engineering types just like to tinker with everything, so this hobby gives us so many variables to mess with. Like a little kid put in front of a huge switchboard full of buttons and told to go wild and push...

    Aging beer

vertical definitely. Your surface to air ratio in the neck of a bottle is much smaller than when it's laying on it's side. +1 to the corked bottles drying out if stored vertical. It will turn wine into vinegar very quickly if stored vertically.

What I brought back from Nashville w/pic

Being in Nashville every day, its surprising to hear people talk about beers they can't get at home that you can get here. I am always complaining about beers i cant get in Tennessee. I look forward to business trips to Ohio solely for the purpose that there are a lot of beers i cant get here...

    ranger ipa...

When i started out on my journey into good beer, i was all malt. The darker, thicker, and maltier, the better. I may not necessarily like all beers now, but i appreciate them all for what they are. I love ipa's and barleywines both. I'm not a big fan of the esters in alot of the belgians, but...

Groupon Today for Nashville/Middle TN Brewers

I was just coming on here to post this groupon, but looks like i was beat to it. What an awesome deal. I buy everything from Rebel, because they have better prices, but you can't beat 50% off. I work very near All Seasons, and used to shop there before i found Rebel, but they are nice and...

    Acquiring kegs - legally

Hey J-Malone As a fellow Tennessean, I've checked all of my local recycling places as well. They are correct about not being able to have them. It is a felony for them to accept ANY part of a keg, even if it is cut up, or even the spear if they can recognize it. It's also a felony here to...

    www.fiftypoundsack.com - cheap bulk grain

Tennessee has a sales tax on all goods sold in the state in a brick and mortar store, or even online if the company has a brick and mortar store within state boundaries. The one good thing that comes from that is we have no state income tax.

    Need names of terrible beers

I have to agree about the Mickey's. I had a buddy that bought it thinking it was an Irish ale because of the name, then he pours me one and surprises me with it. It was a "fine" example of cold piss after a night of heavy drinking. I have to give a 4th vote to SA cherry wheat, and a 2nd to the...

    Weighing down dry hop bag

i've got a few large marbles (1" od) that weigh a hop bag down nicely. I dry hop in a better bottle with the larger mouth on it, so there is no chance of it getting stuck. I have a work colleague that brews as well, and he used a marble in his glass carboy, and after the hops settled, it made a...

    Spring time "seasonal"

I agree about the any beer, any time of the year! It just gets hard to come in after working in the yard, especially in the summer heat of 103 F with 90% humidity, and pop open a RIS as a thirst quencher. I've never brewed a kolsch, saison, or cream style. How would you describe the saison...

    Spring time "seasonal"

I've got 12 Belgian blonds left from a previous batch, with another 5 gallons in the secondary. I've got 1/2 a batch of oatmeal stouts left, and a freshly bottled batch of ESB that will be fully conditioned on the 24th. I haven't made an IPA in a long time, and the last batch was a Ruination...

    Spring time "seasonal"

I'm looking at my empty primary, and thinking ahead to the upcoming spring. I've got enough in the supply line to last me until then, but I'm thinking of what would be a good crisp, refreshing, "welcome to spring" beer. I was thinking something along the lines of EdWort's Bee cave brewery...

    www.fiftypoundsack.com - cheap bulk grain

i love the guys at Rebel. Those guys are my LHBS, so there isn't shipping on anything I buy, so that makes things cheaper already. Tyler up there sent me an email the other day when i asked about bulk grain buying, he gave me the fiftypoundsack website. He said that a little has to be added to...

    Traveling to Dayton, Ohio

being from Dayton, any brew pubs you can recommend for when i'm up there? I'd hate to either get stuck drinking good beer in the hotel room all week, or being forced to drink BMC all week if i feel like getting out.

Dead space with batch sprage with SS braid

i helped by buddy build his copper manifold in a square cooler, identical to mine. His had so much more left behind than mine did, and we finally figured out what it was. he didn't teflon tape his threads into the bulkhead fitting, and wasn't getting a good air tight seal. once the wort drained...
