Brewing as an auction item -nonprofit can I do this?

I can't answer the question regarding the legality of the auction. However, I can offer another idea for involving your beer. Depending on how the auction is being run, perhaps you can donate the beer to be given out to attendees during the auction. Many local charity auctions I have been to...

    dry hopping w/ citra

I have used Citra in 2 brews. It worked very well as an aroma hop. It also paired surprisingly well with oak in my Wheat Wine.

    Color Way, Way off

My latest hydrometer sample of the same brew (the number 8)was also lighter than I thought it would be. I think it could be because the hydrometer tube is so narrow. It will probably look darker in a glass. Only time will tell.

Starting my first batch soon, a couple questions.

I would add the candy sugar in the last 10 minutes of the boil, or at the end.

NB The Number 8 Extract Kit....banana?

Thanks Yooper! A stick on thermometer would probably help. Also, you have a good point about pitching temps. As a follow up question, I have a section of my basement that has no heat in it at all (as opposed to the rest of the basement which is just poorly heated) and it stays a fairly...

NB The Number 8 Extract Kit....banana?

I am in the process of brewing The Number 8 (Belgian strong dark ale) kit from Northern Brewer. My fermentation has slowed down so I took a gravity reading. Afterwards I smelled and tasted the gravity sample. To be honest, the taste and smell seem off to me. Although the flavor is not bad...

No Chill Wort? Leave it for a day in sealed fermenter??

I have done exactly what you describe for all of my batches since I moved into my current apartment. I do not have a chiller and my sink is too small for an ice bath. It takes about 12 - 24 hours for the wort to cool pitchable temps. DO NOT PUT BOILING WORT INTO A GLASS CARBOY. Since I have...

    What could have happened?

A shift in room temperature can cause the pressure in the fermenter to change and the water can move. Or, the fermentation may just be going very slow at this point.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I am brewing a half batch of wheat wine (extract). Only a half batch because I am experimenting with the recipe.

    Smack Pack break

I pitched the yeast from the broken pack. It seems to be bubbling away. Only time will tell if it gets infected. Thanks for the help.

    Smack Pack break

I know I will always have spare yeast from now on. Hindsight=20/20

    Smack Pack break

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the yeast in a sanitized pyrex container with a loose fitting lid on it. I am curious if I can see it come to life. In a few hours I will either pitch it or use dry yeast. I appreciate your advise ans will let you know how it turns out.

    Smack Pack break

I just gave a smack pack of yeast a good whack and it broke open. This is the first time something like this has happened to me. Can I still let the yeast fester in it, or is it doomed? I am planning on pitching the yeast in about 4 hours.

    Lets talk about wheat wine..

@hopheadnj I am thinking of brewing this. Is an airlock during primary ok, or do you recommend a blowoff hose?
