    IPA Hop Pairing

I'll be brewing an IPA on Sunday and was wondering how well Chinook and Citra hops go together for aroma/dry-hopping if others have tried it before. Here is my current planned schedule: 1oz Magnum (17%AA) @ 60' 0.5ozChinook/0.5oz Citra @ 15' 0.5oz Chinook/0.5oz Citra @ 5' 1.0oz...

    Don't Fear the Foam??

Here's what I do: Add 1 gallon of water to the primary fermenter. Add 1/4oz StarSan Put on lid and shake the **** out of it for a couple seconds By now it should be FULL of foam. So I put the sanitizing liquid into my bucket with all my brew-tools in it, and leave the mass of foam in the...

    Beer Hop IBU Question

http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/ithaca-cascazilla/37289/ Not sure if it's a reliable source but it says the IBU=50. According to the BJCP that's in like with an American or English IPA, but below an IIPA style (the lower end of which is IBU=60, which Hop Devil is).

    A Brewing Dilemma!!

If you have a fermenting bucket, I would just brew and throw it in there! I always do my primary in an 8 gallon bucket and then rack to a 5 gal carboy for secondary. So by the time this one is done in primary, you'll either have a new carboy stopper or you'll have freed up the other carboy.

    Racking Advice

I have to echo the sentiment of getting an auto-siphon, they are wonderful! Also leave the end of the tube below the surface of the liquid to avoid introducing more oxygen.

    Vanilla Porter Help

Hi, I tried a wonderful beer last night that I really want to try and emulate. It was a Vanilla Porter by Vertigo brewing here in Oregon. I don't necessarily need a clone recipe, but I'd really like some help putting together an Extract recipe for a Vanilla Porter! I'm pretty sure I'll just...

    Apfelwein Fermentation Temps

Okay I have another question: Does the carboy need to be covered to keep it out of the light like a beer, or can it just be sitting around like it has been since last night?

    Apfelwein Fermentation Temps

Excellent, I'll just wait it out for about 2 months and then bottle I think. Unless you'd recommend longer, I've just heard that 2 months is the minimum. Or is that time in bottle?

    Apfelwein Fermentation Temps

Thanks marubozo, that calms my fears. I just finished putting the airlock on and cleaning up. I didn't see anything about aerating in the recipe on here though, so I just added the yeast and then added the last bit of apple juice and capped the sucker. Is that okay or should I go shake it up...

    Primary Fermentation Movement

If you didn't vigorously shake it or anything, I'd say just relax! I move my primary around between rooms throughout the weeks carefully, trying to get keep it in the correct temp range and both brews so far have turned out great.

    Apfelwein Fermentation Temps

I'm going to make a batch of Edwort's Apfelwein this evening and was wondering what the ideal fermentation temps are? I'm not sure if the higher temps in my apartment will affect the Montrachet yeast the same way it would an ale yeast. Is 75-80 way too hot? I can try to keep it in the low...

    Final gravity for a porter

Bubbling in the air lock isn't a reliable way to gauge activity, so make sure to take 3 gravity readings in a row (one per day). If it stays constant then I think that is a reliable indication that you can transfer.

    I wanna make beer but??

I also live in an apt. and I've never heard any complaints about the smell. It smells quite good and I brew with the windows open, so it probably just smells like you're cooking to other people. Don't worry about it and get your kit!

any recipes for women who don't like beer?

My gf is the same way so I stopped trying a long time ago. Contrary to what some people say, some people just do NOT like beer. I'd definitely try the apfelwein, I think I'm going to make that myself here this week. :mug:

    Sanitizing Bottles in Oven

Thanks, that would've made it a bit quicker. Always learning!

How do you chill your wort?

I use an ice bath, alternating between both sides of my sink every ~10 minutes. Takes ~30-40 minutes to cool down though, not ideal.

    Sanitizing Bottles in Oven

I bottled using my starsan method this morning, and remembered why I wanted to try the oven pretty quickly... The way I have to do it is mix the starsan in the sink, then submerge 6 bottles at a time, empty/fill/cap, then submerge another 6 bottles, etc. It takes quite a bit of time doing it...

    Sanitizing Bottles in Oven

I was simply trying different techniques out. I know it may have taken more time, but perhaps another time. Packing for this weekend took over, so it looks like I'll just use starsan this go-around.

    Bottling After 11-12 Days?

Yeah, I poured a bit into a shot glass and it already tasted like something I'd drink, and it was room temp and not carbonated lol. I'll definitely be bottling it tomorrow before I leave for rest of the week.
