    Barley Crusher for Flour?

I did some web searching, but couldn't find much information. I'm curious, could use my Barley Crusher for grinding wheat berries into flour? Also wondering about corn and other grains, and whether the gap can be set small enough. Thanks.

    Thermometer Question

For my last few batches, I have been using a thermometer like this: http://morebeer.com/view_product/18686/102228/Thermometer_-_Digital_With_Alert (I got mine from Walmart, not morebeer.com) Anyway, I accidentally got it wet past the probe part and now it's pretty much ruined. I was thinking...

    2nd All Grain Batch

I did my second all grain batch yesterday, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I designed the recipe from an Octoberfest extract kit I made earlier in the year, with a little altering: 10 lb Vienna Malt .5 lb Light Crystal 60L .5 lb CaraAmber 35L .5 lb CaraPils 15L 1 oz...

    Good Hops Source

I'm looking to get several types of whole leaf hops, but the place I usually order from (Midwest Supplies) is out of a few of the ones I need. I know my local home brew store doesn't have them either. Can anyone recommend some other reliable sources to buy whole leaf hops? Thanks.

    Yeast Washing Question

I read the yeast washing sticky on here, and loosely followed it today with some WYeast Pacman. What I did was boiled the jars, kept them full of the water and let it cool. After bottling, I dumped them all onto the yeast cake and swirled it around some. Then I dumped the water/yeast slurry back...

    Michigan (Tri-Cities)

Hello, I joined a few weeks ago, but just found this introduction thread. I've always been fascinated by homebrewing, and recently took it up. I work for a large beer distributing company and also part time as a paid on call firefighter. Love the website!

    First Non-Kit Batch

I've done two batches from extract kits, and I wanted to try one with my own recipe. I was hoping some of you could take a look at my plans and give some advice. I'm getting the ingredients from midwestsupplies.com Ingredients: 6 lb Briess Gold LME 1 lb Honey Malt Specialty Grain 1 lb...

    Hops Choices

I was planning on growing some hops this year, but can't make up my mind what to get. I was gonna grow three different types, one of them will be Willamette. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for the other two types. I would like to have three contrasting types so I can experiment some.

    First Batch to Secondary

I moved my first batch (extract) to its secondary fermenter today. I didn't really know what to expect. It is a Brewers Best German Oktoberfest. My OG after boiling was 1.059, a few points higher than indicated in the directions. I was concerned because the batch really only actively fermented...

    Beer Smith Question

I downloaded the free trial of Beer Smith (might buy it if I can figure out how to use it). Is there a way I can figure out what my final gravity should be, based on original gravity, ingredients, etc?

    Taking hydrometer readings

Sorry if this question seems dumb, but I did a search and couldn't find it anywhere. I'm wondering, what's the best method of taking a beer sample for hydrometer testing. I've seen that a lot of people use a turkey baster or wine theif, but this means you have to pull the cap off your bucket or...

    Two bottling Questions

I'm new to homebrewing, did my first batch a couple weeks ago. I won't be ready to bottle for at least a few more weeks, but I have a few questions about it. 1. My batch is an extract kit, with everything measured out, directions, etc. My question is about the priming sugar and bottle size...

    Carboy and Primary Fermentation

I've been reading a lot of good information on this forum, and decided to join. I brewed my first batch a little over a week ago and it's fermenting in the bucket right now. My question is about carboys. I was thinking of getting a few (5 gallon) so I can have 2 or 3 batches going at one. I...
