    Another Carboy Horror Story

That looks pretty cool. Do you have a write up on you made those bad boys?

    Screwed up hop addition

Thanks for the input! I will go with the lower gravity...and I will shoot for one quart post boil. I'm planning on boiling the remaining 3/4 oz. I'll post an update and let you know how it all turns out. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!!

    Screwed up hop addition

That's my fear...the high AA hop and the amount that I left out. This is Northern Brewer's Brickwarmer Holiday Red....so...a healthy Red/Amber...OG in the 1.062 range. Hops called for are 3/4 oz Magnum for 60 mins and 1 oz Styrian Goldings for 10 mins. (There is also an oz of sweet orange...

    Screwed up hop addition

Oh Boy, I screwed this up. I was inputting a recipe that I recently brewed into my software and noticed that I misread the boil hop addition. It called for 3/4 oz magnum for 60 mins. I read it as 1/4 oz. (the type is small on the recipe sheet..and I had my readers on...and...hell, I don't...

    "Home Draft" Mini Kegerator

Do you mean flipping the seal that is in the regulator thingie on the home draft bottles? Does it still stay seated in there well? I'm always a little worried about losing that thing.....seems like it might be tough to replace. That would be great, though, to get a more reliable seal with...

    Vomit!?

Yeah....and my issues are chlorophenols....just a thought that the two might be related. Probably time to replace regardless.

    Vomit!?

My oldish bottling bucket and my most recent length of transfer tubing both have a kind of vomity smell that seems to linger in them. This is after long soaks in oxyclean and a bleach vinegar solution. Have had some plasticy batches recently too. Think that is some sort of infection or...

    Chlorophenols in primary

Well, I think I will make a few small extract batches and try to isolate some things until I have a clue about its origin. In my mind, the most logical place to start is the water.

    Chlorophenols in primary

I think replacing my plastic is a good idea. Some of it is old - like 4-5 years old. Not my tubing, but my spigots, bottling bucket, etc. I am starting to wonder more and more about the batch in the primary though. How anal are you guys/gals about covering your wort as it cools. I have the...

    Chlorophenols in primary

I'll keep an eye on the batch in the primary. It is suppose to be dry hopped...I might just skip that at this point and see how it progresses or digresses. Man...post boil...that's only the yeast (rehydrated in boiled, cooled water; the chiller; the funnel; the carboy. That's it. Could it be...

    Chlorophenols in primary

I can smell it in the batch in my primary right now. Unless I'm ragingly paranoid and it's just fermentation byproduct poo smell....but it sure smells like plastic to me. I agree on the bottle infection part....but none of the bottling equipment has been used on the batch in the primary right...

    Chlorophenols in primary

Yeah....I think that's the direction that I am going to head. No hoses for water - straight from the tap into a 4 gallon plastic carboy with a hunk of campden tab. I use that water for everything...including sanitizer....then refill and more campden as needed. I guess if I do a batch with r/o...

    Chlorophenols in primary

    any suggestions on approach?

    Chlorophenols in primary

I am frustrated by chlorophenols! I have had these boogers pop up in some batches..and confirmed by judges in competition. I'm talking about the plasticy aroma and flavor version of phenols. I have treated my last 6 or 7 batches with campden and they have been pretty clean. However, after...

    Airlock aroma in my beer!

Would anyone describe an airlock odor as "phenolic?" I suppose I could describe this odor as being vaguely plasticy or medicinal....vaguely tho......

    Airlock aroma in my beer!

I usually go 3-4 weeks primary, no secondary. Ferm temps usually between 60-70....couple of weeks in the bottle..sometimes I'll pop one after a week to see what its doing. It certainly is not a hops smell, nor does it strike me as particularly yeasty.....but much like what I often get from my...

    Airlock aroma in my beer!

I sometimes have an off aroma in my beer, and I've noticed it in other's homebrews as well. I can't really describe it in a way that syncs with the typical descriptors for off aromas/flavors: band-aid, wet cardboard, satun's anus, etc. I usually pick this up in some bottles, but not all...

When to plant rooted sidearm cuttings?

I asked my menopausal wife what she would do if she found hormones rooting in the garage. She said she would probably eat them. Hope that helps.......
