Thanks for the help! I am trying out brewers friend, but it seems to say 75% efficiency no matter what I do. Is this correct?

How to figure our my brewing setup

Hello all, I've been brewing all-grain for awhile and producing tasty beers, but I've sort of been shooting in the dark and having issues with consistency because I don't have a solid idea of what the efficiency of my system is etc.. I'm going to brew a beer tomorrow morning and I'm wondering...

    Craft beer in London

Yes, I would love to try whatever is considered some of the best craft beer in both of those countries. Not really looking for beer from commercial breweries, unless of course those are "better" than the craft breweries!

    Craft beer in London

Hello all, my sister is going to be in London and Germany and she's asking if I'd like for her to bring some beer to me here in the States. I'm wondering if you all could recommend some great beers from London and/or Germany? Thanks!

Did I infect this beer? Do I need to dump it?!

I'm honestly not sure what temp I was fermenting at. I am keeping the fermenter in a closet that seems reasonable cool. I have the fermenter sitting on a blanket because I thought the floor might be too cold. Other than that I have the house thermostat kept in 69F or so. I live in an apartment...

Did I infect this beer? Do I need to dump it?!

I mashed at 154F for an hour. Checked the temp after 10-15 minutes and it was still sitting at 154F. After an hour though, When I opened the lid, it was sitting at like 142F! I should have brought up the temp again and let it sit for maybe 15-20 minutes more. My mistake. I didn't take one. My...

Did I infect this beer? Do I need to dump it?!

Hi all, Recently, I brewed a sweet stout (Original thread found below) https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/threads/low-og-for-sweet-stout.639143/ I took a pre-boil OG reading and it was 1.038, which seemed pretty low to me. Nothing I could do about it so I went ahead and brewed the beer. I...

    Low OG for Sweet Stout?

Yep, krausen has already formed. I'm gonna let nature take care of this one. I'm sure I'll end up with beer either way :)

    Low OG for Sweet Stout?

Thanks for the replies. No choice now but to just run with it. Quick question - When I pitched the yeast I just opened the dry packet and sprinkled it into my carboy. There seems to be some still just sitting on top. Is it ok to give my carboy a good shake or three? Or will this cause bad...

    Low OG for Sweet Stout?

Hello all, I haven't brewed in awhile and just recently my girlfriend and I got inspired to brew a clone of the Split Shot milk stout. To be honest, I'm not sure what my Original gravity should be, but I took a preboil sample today and it came out to be 1.038. Doesn't that seems a little low? I...

    Confused on when to bottle

Cool, thanks for the information! When I get back I will do this: Throw in some hops into my Primary and dryhop for 7days. Then bottle for two weeks - then drink! Thanks again!

    Confused on when to bottle

Hi all, I brewed a black IPA on Friday June 12th. I was planning on dry hopping in Primary if I have time. I am going out of town and leaving on the night of June 27th. Normally, I do a 3 week primary, bottle for 2 weeks, and then drink. This time I am not so sure. I thought that...

    No sparging?

I just want to make the best beer possible. I do care about efficiency, but am not sure how to go about all of that.

    No sparging?

I found a black IPA recipe for 5 gallons online. I scaled that recipe to 3 gallons because I only have a 4 gallon brew kettle and a 5 gallon mash tun. Then I added up my total grains: 7.03 lbs. Then I did the mash water calculation: 1.25 quarts per lbs. 1.25 x 7 = 16quarts = 4 gallons...
