Hi Fellow Homebrewers, In my pursuit in trying to brew an authentic "oldschool" German/Munich Helles, I have come across a few questions during my beer style research that I wanted to bounce off of the homebrew community for the experts and experienced among us. If I have read correctly...

    IPL Recipe - Advice?

Hi, I am looking to do an IPL recipe but with the focus on having a nice caramel malt background and a orangey-citrus hop character. To get the nice caramel malt background I've considered the following malt bill: 85% Pilsner Malt 7.5% CaraHell (~10L Crystal) 7.5% CaraDark (~50L...

Real hazelnuts in a nutbrown ale?

I actually am in the same boat, well, kind of..... it is a secret ale that will involve hazelnuts, that's all I can say as of now ;) Here are a couple of links I have found with people using real hazelnuts. I do know about the oils and the head retention, but you have to try everything...

Whats the next step to being a better brewer and when should I take it.

I'm in the exact same carboy man. Just brewed my first 2 beers with extract and specialty grains. I want to build my own wort chiller soon, and eventually start to build my kit to an All-Grain setup. I am fortunate enough to have the LHBS give a free demo this weekend on how to All-Grain brew...

Christmas Brown - First Recipe Attempt

Well, I am pretty new to all of this, but I have been doing some research on a brown I would like to brew in the near future: Other yeast strands you might want to consider: Ringwood Ale (Wyeast 1187) - malty, complex, clears well British Ale - (Wyeast xxxx) - malty, vigorous fermentation...

98 hours and counting!! NO FERMENTATION!

I am new to this, and I waited quite a bit for my first signs of fermentation, but not that long! Wow! I would recommend what someone recommended to me. You might need to oxygenate your wort. I was told to shake the carboy or bucket vigorously to get more air into the wort. This really helped...

    Cleaning fluid taste

I know that PBW will really need to be rinsed properly. That may have been your problem. The sanitizer shouldn't have affected anything. Gosh, that really sucks though with your beer. I wish you more luck in the future! Cheers, Chris

    Star San

Yeah, I had the same question not too long ago. After researching a bit, I found out that the Star San is fine to leave foamy, sp you can leave it in there. Remember, it is 1oz for 5 gal so use it sparingly. I would recommend less, use 1 gal of water and swish it around. Less foam and probably...

Please Help! First brew and no fermentation!

Update: So this morning I went to check it out and saw small white spots of foam but still no bubbling, and after seeing the posts and talking to the homebrew supply store guy this morning, I decided to aerated the beer by shaking it after sanitizing my hand (gosh, that carboy with the beer in...

Please Help! First brew and no fermentation!

Also, adding more yeast I have researched, would make the yeast lazy, and reduce the banana/clove flavor to the beer. Any comments?

Please Help! First brew and no fermentation!

Plenty of air? ^^^ How do i do that? Just swirl it around with the air-lock on? Or leave the airlock off and give it some air? I'm probably going to the homebrew store tomorrow and will pick up another yeast pack, just to be safe.
