OK to make dog treats if using rive hulls?

I'm in the middle of a brew (Yooper's Oatmeal Stout) and I'm thinking of using the spent grain for a batch of dog treats. However, I put a half pound of rice hulls in this batch and I've never done that with grain for treats before. Think it will be OK? I don't want anybody's pups to have a...

OK to use old DME for starters?

Getting ready to make a starter for Saturday's brew and I'm wondering if it would be OK to use some DME that's probably a year old. It's been in a zip lock bag but is more crunchy than powder. I do have some fresh stuff but have to throw out a batch worth if it is OK to use. What do you think?

    Feedback on a Belgian recipe

Hi all - I haven't been able to brew much lately and it looks like I'm going to have a chance to get one or two drew days in before the holidays so I'll have some homebrew for friends & family. One of the beers I want to brew is a revised recipe of a Belgian Golden Ale I brewed a couple years...

Looking for quick & cheap CO2 rig

I have a CO2 tank set up for my kegerator but for the 4th of July I will be taking a keg of my summer ale to a friends house for the festivities. I don't want to have to tear apart my CO2 setup for the kegerator so I'm looking for a quick and inexpensive way to do this. The beer will be...

    Beersmith mobile for android

I am on my tablet and for whatever reason, I can't enter any letters into the search box - keyboard just disappears after a second... Anyway, I'm wondering ii anyone has the new android version of Beersmith. I've read about it on the BS website and on the Google apstore but it's not clear to me...

    Use a Griffin beaker?

I kicked off my starter for this weekend's brew and I started thinking about Christmas prizes I might ask for. Currently I have a one gallon clear glass "cookie jar" that I give the occasional shake to get a bit of extra oxygen in. I am thinking of asking for a real live stir plate but instead...

    That made my day!

I had a friend drop by a little while ago. He was bringing me two bombers of Stone Enjoy By 10-25-13 which are always a challenge to find before they are gone. He also brought along a bottle of Stone's Levitation which is one of his favorite craft beers. He brought it because he new I had a...

How and when do I do a diacityl rest

I have a Stone Levitation clone fermenting now and according the the Can You Brew It podcast I should do a diacityl rest. I've poked around a bit on this topic but can't find the definitive answer. How and when do you do it? Thanks!

Question on my new false bottom

A while back I made a false bottom for my 10 gallon cooler/mash tun. The false bottom is made from a deep dish pizza pan and I drilled about a million holes in it (felt that way at least). This past weekend was the first time I used it and because the FB has a height about equal to the 1 gallon...

Had a Drake's Alpha Session Ale yesterday

Went to Churchill's in San Marcos for brunch yesterday and saw a Drake's beer on the tap list. Haven't seen a lot of their beer down here and when I noticed it was a session ale that was supposed to have 50 IBU's I figured I'd better give it a try. I'm not sure if it was 50 IBU's or not but...

making a reduced ABV version of a recipe?

I have decided that I want my next batch to be a Saison and I really like the looks of the recipe from usurpers26 for How Rye I Am Saison (and the rave reviews from people who have brewed it). However, I'd like to take the ABV down to the mid 5% to 6% range. I scaled the recipe in BS and I...

FG came in pretty high - what to do?

So I just racked my Pliny Clone into the keg and the hydro sample I pulled off says I only got down to 1.020 for the FG. The OG was 1.078 and although the recipe that came with the kit doesn't give an FG, doing the math it would need to be around 1.013 to have been at their ABV. I followed my...

    Starter question

I put together a starter last night thinking it would be done in 24 hours and I'd be able to use it for my brew today. Not sure what the deal is but the starter is still cookin' - about a half inch of Kräusen right now. So I want to let the starter finish up but I'm not sure what to do with my...

Uh oh, need a quick answer!

So I am brewing a batch of Pliny from a MoreBeer kit that my brother in-law sent me. I guess I misread the recipe and dumped the 1lb of corn sugar in at the start of the boil (recipe says last 10 minutes). Should I add more sugar at the 10 minute mark or just forget about it? I'm at 30...

    My new false bottom

I've been using a SS braid in my mash tun and it works well but I notice that when I was stirring my mash I was shoving the braid all around and sometimes when I finished a batch and was taking the grain out the braid would be sticking up like Dilberts tie. I had thought of a false bottom for a...

    Dry hopping techniques?

I will be brewing a batch of Pliny The elder shortly and it has a boat load of dry hops in the recipe (5oz of three varieties). I ferment in a better bottle and I don't normally do a secondary. Coincidently, I caught the Q&A podcast on brewstrong where they were discussing dry hop techniques...

    Got a Pliny kit!

My brother in law surprised me with a Pliny kit from More Beer last week and before I brew it I want to get a few questions answered. When he bought the kit he didn't realize I had been all grain brewing for a couple of years so he got me a LME kit with steeping grains. There are instructions...

Christmas Keezer is loaded & ready

Back in early October I decided that I'd do three different beers for Christmas. Shortly after that I started doing the backward calculation on when I needed to get things started so they'd all be finished by Christmas. That was my "oh crap" moment when I realized I should have started a month...
