    Sweetening cider

I'm making another 1 gal batch of cider, and this time I have decided to sweeten it when I bottle it. The last batch I did dry and still. It was pretty good, but I think a little sweetness and some carbonation might help. So this time I plan on bottling it with some priming sugar. I also bought...

    Aging in corked bottles

About a week after I bottled my mead, (and I swear it was clear when I did) I had laid them on their sides from the start, and when I drew them out for labeling, I noticed each of them had a strip of sediment sticking to the side. Well, I was upset about this, so I stuck the bottles in the...

I know about for carbonating, I mean for sweetening without adding sugar. Non-sugar sweetner.

    Getting ready to start one

I was thinking, most ciders I have tasted also seem at least a little sweet. I am not sure if I want mine sweetened, perhaps maybe a little bit. But I am planning on naturally carbonating the cider in the bottle, so I don't want to kill the yeast off, nor do I want to make apple wine or bottle...

wow...4 days later already done fermenting. Gravity is now about 1.008-1.005-ish OG was 1.050. That makes an abv of 5.7? Racked to secondary for clearing. Couldn't believe how much sediment was on the bottom. Anyways, it looks clear already, but I'm just gonna let it settle for a while before...

    Wine stuck

Yeah, it's been bottled and laying onit's side for a couple weeks now. I took them out yesterday to see if any sediment had settled on the sides of the bottle, but there is none. Liquid is still nice and clear, so it looks like I successfully bottled it without getting any crap in it. We'll...

    Sodium Metabisulfite

Soak bottles in non-scented bleach for about 15 minutes diluted in hot water. Rinse bottles out really well and get rid of all traces of bleach. Do this no more than a couple hours before bottling or run the risk of germs reintroducing themselves to your bottles. To kill yeast and help to...

    Getting ready to start one

Wow... Only a few hours after pitching yeast and setting the carboy in the utility room, it started bubbling yesterday. Today it's going nuts. This stuff is aggressive! How long normally does it take to ferment out in the primary before I need to rack it? It's about 3,300 grams of sugar to...

How many hydometers have you broken?

I've broken a few hydrometers taking gravities on a submarine battery. Kinda hard to crawl around on your belly and not drop those things. :D

How many hydometers have you broken?

Whats the advantage of making your own beer? Or making anything of your own? Because you can. And sometimes, you can do it better than what you can buy in the store.

How many hydometers have you broken?

You can make your own hydrometers you know.

You know, I usually read about people tossing in a packet of yeast, but every recipe I have done so far, including the one I am about to use, gives a precise measurement of yeast to add. Does it really matter as long as you add enough? Is there a thumbrule for how much you add per gallon or...

    First Label Ever..

Well, I dunno if I would drink that stuff. The squirrel is kinda scary.

Thankyou for your replies. I will try this juice then, since I like the taste and it costs next to nothing anyways. I am only doing a gallon batch, like the mead I am almost done with and the wines I have made. I'm doing only gallon batches for now to gain experience in brewing and to figure out...

    Blank labels

I used photoshop to design my labels. It is about the best program out there for amatuer "artists" to design anything on a computer. Costs a bit, but well worth it if you plan on designing things that look professional. Comes in handy for alot of things besides making lables for homebrew. It can...

i think this stuff is from walmart too. Either there or Kroger. It's like a generic store brand.

    Getting ready to start one

I'm about to start my first cider and I'm in the dilemma of finding an acceptable juice without paying too much. Well, the stuff we normally buy is pretty cheap, and pretty good, and it doesn't say anything about preservatives on it. The ingredients say only apple juice and ascorbic acid...

    Wife wants a wine.

Riesling can be a good medium white. I just made a Chardonnay I'd describe as "medium" as well. Not sure what you mean, but I don't have any specific recipes if that's what you want.

    My first label heh

Except most people who will see this bottle don't know what mead is made of unles I explain it to them. Besides, I'm specifying honey type, and since there's a big difference between Clover and Clover Honey as ingredients, it's somewhat necessary and called for. So nyaah. :rockin:
