    Who's got simcoe?

Looks like Brewmaster's Warehouse has them... Not too bad a price either. http://www.brewmasterswarehouse.com/product/0101952/simcoe-pellets

How do you learn about brew upcoming competitions?

I watch the local brewing club pages, even though I don't belong to any.

6 Gallon PET carboy by the Vintage Shop

I picked up one of these a few months ago from my LHBS. I love it and always pick it over my Better Bottle if it's free. Nice sturdy straight sides and the walls seam thicker than the BB.

Ebay Keg cowboy regulator any good?

Any plans for triple or quad regulators? I just starting buying parts for my keezer build and am in the market. Edit: Or would you consider selling the connectors to build your own?

    rye -> slimy?

I just brewed a Rye IPA as well and noticed the same thing. I have a "ribcage chiller" and the film was connecting the rings over an inch apart as I was pulling it out of the wort. I bet that's gonna make for some pretty massive mouthfeel.

Yeast Test Batches: Bell's, Pacman, Am. Ale II, Denny's Fav.

Subscribed! I'm brewing Denny's Rye IPA for the first time tomorrow and the Denny's Fav yeast its whirling away on the stir plate as I type.

60qt Pot over 2 burners on electric stove?

Wouldn't work for me and I melted the stove knobs and discolored part off the stove top. I built a heat stick and that along with my 2600 watt canning element can get 12 gallons to a solid boil. I love the heat stick.

    UPS... Refractometer!!!

Readings during the boil are useful for making sure you're boil off rate is where it should be. I brew indoors and still notice a difference between winter brewing and summer brewing. Check gravity with your refrac at 30 min and audjust your boil if needed.

So what does oxidation taste like?

Kind of what I was thinking. You would need to mimic oxygen exposure at packaging. I don't think the effects would show up right away.

So what does oxidation taste like?

I have been wanting to learn to spot oxidation flavors as well. Next time I bottle I'm going to leave a few bottles uncapped until I'm done, remove the tubing from the racking cane, attach a sterile filter, and start blowing bubbles. I think that ought to do the trick after a few weeks :)

Working on a recipe designer / batch manager for Android - who's interested?

My interest in an android brewing platform would be mostly for brew day utilities. The ability to export a beer xml file to my dropbox then just crack it open on my phone and have timers ready to go would be awesome. Ability to tweak thinks like your bittering addition for the alpha acids of...

Grain first, or strike water first?

That's what I did, but I used compressions fittings after I saw that some people we're having trouble with "stainless steel" hose clamps rusting. http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/daveotero/IMAG0799.jpg

Grain first, or strike water first?

I add grain to water because I preheat my tun with strike temp + 10F water first. I'm only on all-grain batch 5 but I've never had a dough ball. Mash thin, 1.3qt per pound or more and stir well. I use a giant wisk rather than a paddle and it works great. I ordered my from Rebel Brewer but you...

cold beer, warm priming water = bad mixing?

Cool, I'm curious to hear the results. Seams like I'm in the minority here so maybe there was some other issue in play for me. I'm sticking with my routine for now though. Having 4 cases of hardly carbed beer sucked! :( Edit: The sinking thing makes since too but in my case you never really...

    AG Average Brew Time

Only on my fourth AG batch but seam to be right at 5.5 hours from when I enter the brew house until everything is cleaned and put away. That's for 6 gallons with a double batch sparge, 90 min boil, and whirlpooling with a 15 - 30 min rest.

Tips for Bourbon Oak Russian Imp. Stout

I would suggest checking out this Brewing Network podcast with Shea Comfort. The wood ageing stuff starts around the 2:00 mark and it's an unbelievable amount of information presented in a concise and easy to understand manner. I wish Shea would write a book. I'd buy it in a sec...

cold beer, warm priming water = bad mixing?

That was my process as well, and it worked flawlessly until I started crash cooling to 30F. Are you crashing?

cold beer, warm priming water = bad mixing?

Unfortunely yes, I have had this issue and most of the bottles did not carb correctly. Out of about 50 bottles, 2 or 3 would be way overcarbed and gushing and the rest hardly carbed at all. My situation was exaggerated as my priming solution was probably closer to 100F. I have avoided the...
