Growing hops in the devils anus.

Congrats - good to see some hop sprout action. I am at least a month away from sprouts. Still a foot of snow on the ground (Minneapolis, MN area). 26 degrees for a high tomorrow, but a warm up coming. I'll post some pics when things get going here.

    Texas Hop Garden

Great to see hops growing in Texas (lot of folks say it can't be done). My hops sprouted, then 4 days later 4 inches of snow and snow for 6 days straight! Temps are hovering between 30 and 35 so I am waiting for this winter that would not go away - to go away. Not sure if the snow covered hop...

Good luck and keep us posted on your hops. I am very interested if it can be done in Texas.

    Growing hops

Depending on variety, maturity, height and conditions, you can easily get half a pound dried hops per plant.

    growing hops

10 feet won't be an issue. Less height/surface area for fewer cones but it won't hurt the bines. Once they top out, they will start to send out laterals (branches) and bush out. Same varieties should be placed at least 3 feet apart and different varieties a minimum of 5-6 feet apart so they...

    growing hops

In big enough pots (5 gallon or bigger) they will easily reach 15 to 20+ feet. So give them as much rope/twine as you can (up to 20 feet). They will take what you give them - if 10 feet is all you can muster, give it to them.

    Hop rhizome buying

Here is a list of online hop rhizomes vendors (a couple even sell hop plants). http://www.growinghopsyourself.com/growing-hops/where-to-buy-hop-rhizomes/ The varieties you choose depend upon the styles you brew, but generally you want at least 1 aroma hop and 1 bittering hop (minimum). You...

Growing hops near well - invasive?

Hop roots go deep and wide. I would keep 'em at least 20 feet away from your well to be safe.

    Growing Hops

You are right. Picking hops by hand is a pain and time consuming. While hops are cheap now, they haven't always been - there have been shortages too. It is more of a do it yourself satisfaction thing and knowing what if any chemicals were used. Hops also make a great cover for arbors...

Hard to say. My guess A = Magnum, B = Cascade or Chinook

    Growing Arizona Hops - Questions

Glad to hear it is possible to grow hops in AZ. The hop cone pictured is barely out of the burr (spiney) stage - it is not ready for harvest. They will be larger than that and more fragrant and full of lupulin when ripe. When the cones are larger and squeeze easily, and bounce back - they are...

    Hops growing in uk, help

You will have to find a local source, agricultural products are highly restricted for importation. Try homebrew supply stores, local homebrewing/hop growing clubs, a local grower that is willing to dig up some rhizomes... If you find a UK hop rhizome or hop plant vendor, please post to the...

    growing hops in iowa

Cascade hops are very hardy and a good choice. First year, water at least every other day (don't drown them). Second year on they do not require daily or every other day watering. Keep an eye on them and if they start drooping, water them.

    Growing hops in my area

Yes it would. The hop crown / root stalk does not like to sit in standing water - it will kill the plant.

    Growing hops in my area

Hops will grow in PH 5.5 - 8, 6.8 seems to be optimal. Need a well draining, fertile soil but able to hold moisture. I top dress with compost each year. Initially, before you plant, dig down at least a foot and 2 feet in diameter and amend the soil with compost and composted manure if you wish.

    Growing hops in my area

After the danger of frost has past. They are hardy plants - mine have sprouted and easily survived temperature drops in the mid 20's fahrenheit. Most hop rhizome vendors tend to ship before it is time to plant, just store in your refrigerator or take your chances on availability and order just...

    Growing hops in my area

Hops were originally grown in NY as the major supplier in the US. The climate works well for growing hops. Southern exposure is best, but eastern or western exposure will work. Use large pots (minimum 5 gallon bucket size). Just find a way to string a rope/twine to a high point - an eyelet...
