    grr... hop pellets...

Today I brewed with hop pellets for the first time. Everything seemed to be going well until I tried to fire up my pump and recirculate through my cfc to sterilize it before cooling to my carboys. The damn hops created a crazy sludge at the bottom of the kettle that was almost impossible to get...

    HEEERE chickey, chickey, chickey!!!

I got a bag of rolled corn chicken feed for kicks and grins. To brew with it I need to gelatinize(sp?) it. How long do ya need to boil it to have that happen? :)

What is your favorite color? (yeast)

What is your favorite yeasts? I know everybody loves 1056 but what are other yeasts you like for pale ales, IPA, IIPA, ESB? What about them do you like? For instance I LOVE 2112 california lager for my IPA's. I don't know anyone else who has even tried it, but I LOVE THAT YEAST!!! It is a mellow...

    73% efficency without a HLT!

Ok, so I was reading THIS thread and thought wow! Over 70% brewhouse efficency without batch sparging or fly sparging? Just mix all of your preboil water together between the boil kettle and the MLT(plus add in what the grain soaks up)... Yeah right. Even after jkarp posted this, "I've NEVER...

    5 liter kegs...

I've seen a few threads on the 5 liter kegs from Heinekin and Widmer about refilling and their use and how ya can't with all the "stock" parts. First thing I thougt when I saw one for the first time is how can I put my homebrew in it. All the threads say you can't refill them but I just saw a...

Tangerine beer question... quantity, quality and meathod...

My buddy just went to a beer fest and tried a tangerine beer. Got us to thinking. Our thoughts go to 55% wheat, 45% barley minimal hops and a german or similar yeast for the nice clovey flavors. Don't want it over 6% and have a lower FG. Problem is we don't know how much tangerine to add. Is it...

    Feed Store Ingredients?

Just visited a feed store. They have 50lb bags of rolled barley, rolled corn, cracked corn and whole corn for 11-12 bucks. None of it is malted. I'm wondering what it would take to mill the corn down to useable size. That and what kind of corn should I get, rolled, cracked or whole? Rolled...

    Smoked out!!!

I'm not sure if I'm brewin' tomorrow or not. I have everything I need except the yeast (10 block run away. Probly go with my favorite, Rogue Pacman!!!). I've got my trusty Traeger Lil Tex just itching to be used on a daily basis and havn't yet used it to smoke up some grain. I have heard of...

Pineapple enzymes. Would they convert starches?

My SWMBO works with a farmer's wife. I could, if i brought over a growler of beer, score a bucket of nice, fresh, just harvested wheat. I could malt the grains but I am wondering if the enzymes from a pineapple or 2 would be sufficient to convert the starches in 10lbs of grain to sugar... or is...

9%-10% stout, will the grains fit?

Got a 37.75lb grain bill and a converted keg to mash it in. Need to fit that and 47.19 quarts, 12(ish) gallons of water in there. (I usually round up to the closest gallon) Will there be room in my mash tun or if I want to go this big am i just going to have to invest in a nice big cooler? I've...

FG just not getting low enough! 1qt/lb vs. 1.25qt/lb. How important is it?

I'm having a problem getting gravity to go down low enough. I had one beer that started at 1.084 not get below 1.038(had a GIANT starter and it sat for 3 weeks on yeast cake and 2 months in 2nd!!!!), and another that started at 1.046 ended at 1.019. The last one was suppose to be a corona-ish...

scorching wort in place of specialty grains...

What would happen if you took a quart of your first runnings and put it in a sauce pan and tossed it on the stove and darkened it up a bit instead of using crystal malts. Would that work?

How long is long enough when Baking your own grains?

OK, so I've decided to roast some of my own grains. It says to let it sit for a week or more. I'm sure the more you roast it the longer it should sit to get rid of the bad flavors but if you were going to go to a lighter roast, lighter than amber in color for instance, what would the wait be...

Would corn starch added in mash tun work?

Got to thinking again... Not always a good thing. Instead of using corn as an adjunct why not use corn sugar... then my thoughts turned to corn suryp then what about corn starch... Corn starch is crazy cheap. 1/2-1/4 the price of corn sugar. I'm doing all grain anyways would there be a problem...

    Temp control AND humidity?

Am I going to want to get a fridge to cure/ripen/etc... cheese or am I going to want to temperature controll a big humidifier? Would it be easier to humidify a fridge? Seems like bad stuff would grow on the inside of a humid fridge. Maybe put the cheese in a humidifier inside a temp controlled...

What % grain needed in potato beer to convert starches

I'm thinking about making a sweet potato or yam beer and want to get goofy with it. I want to use just enough grain to convert the starches in the potato/sweet potato/yam. What % of the grain bill would be absolutely necessary to convert the starches. I don't mind a 2 hour mash either and I...
